James E. Kinder, chair of the Department of Animal Sciences, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, has been appointed as interim chair of the Department of Human Nutrition. The University Board of Trustees approved a two-year dual appointment, beginning Feb. 2, 2009, and ending Dec. 31, 2010.

"My desire to be interim chair of Human Nutrition stems from the belief that collaborative program endeavors (such as curriculum, graduate education, research, Extension outreach and engagement) should be Ohio State's greatest asset, considering the comprehensive nature of this university," Dr. Kinder said.

Dean Cheryl Achterberg said, "I have received glowing recommendations from Animal Sciences, where Dr. Kinder has been chair for 10 years. His faculty colleagues told me he is an outstanding researcher in livestock reproduction, and is dedicated to producing the next generation of physiologists."

Another hallmark of Kinder's career is his enjoyment in working with people.

Kinder said, "My primary mode of operation as an administrator is to help others succeed, and in doing so, I also succeed in my professional endeavors. This is a simple operations paradigm that has served me well throughout my professional endeavors." He also emphasized the privilege faculty have of working with young people, "something that few in society have the opportunity to do."

Dr. Kinder's primary research interest is the hormones that drive reproductive endocrine regulation in cattle. He said, "My integrative thought processes as an endocrinologist prevailed throughout my research career and continue to be a great advantage in my administrative endeavors."

He graduated with a Bachelor of Agriculture degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1970, a Master of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in 1972, and a Ph.D. from Washington State University in 1975. He taught at Ohio State until 1979, when he returned to the University of Nebraska. He was on the UN faculty for 20 years, and then joined Ohio State's Department of Animal Sciences as chair in 1999.

"I want to thank the previous chair of Human Nutrition, Earl Harrison, for his service to the college and the Department of Human Nutrition," Achterberg said. "Earl is the Dean's Distinguished Professor of Human Nutrition and will continue his leading-edge research into Vitamin A deficiency, one of the most widespread nutritional deficiencies."
