The W. Michael Sherman Laboratory is a welcome resource for researchers in the School of Physical Activity and Educational Services.
"It's most important for exercise science students to have such a facility," said Ya-Ting Hsu (M.A. '07, exercise science), who is conducting her doctoral dissertation study in the lab, located in the PAES Building completed in 2007.
The laboratory is named for Mike Sherman, former director of the school and now senior vice president, provost and chief operating officer for the University of Akron. His wife, Betty Rider, and other family members and numerous friends contributed in his honor.
"It is very spacious and there is all kinds of equipment," Hsu said. For instance, her research, Project CHANGE, takes advantage of the lab's four treadmills, and the room is large enough to bring a weight bench, dumb bells and bench press from another lab. "It's great to have that flexibility," she said.
Researchers test endurance using exercise equipment in the W. Michael Sherman Laboratory.
Hsu works with about 20 sedentary larger size women. One-half only exercise. The other half receive behavior intervention as well as exercise. Hsu will see which eight-week program benefits the women the most.
The Sherman Lab, she said, has easy access for students and researchers, plus subjects can find it easily. The environmental chamber is especially valuable because it allows researchers to simulate all kinds of weather at any time of year.
Project CHANGE and other research conducted in the Sherman Laboratory promise to aid people of all ages and physical needs.
