Daryl Siedentop, professor emeritus of sport and exercise science, receives the Gulick Medal, AAHPERD's highest honor, at a ceremony March 18 in Indianapolis.
In recognition of Daryl Siedentop's leadership, dedication and distinguished career in physical education, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) has granted him its highest honor. The Luther Halsey Gulick Medal was presented March 18, 2010, at the Alliance's national convention in Indianapolis.
Siedentop, professor emeritus of sport and exercise science in the College of Education and Human Ecology, began his career at The Ohio State University in 1970. He eventually became a professor, senior associate dean and interim dean of the former College of Education. After retiring in 2001, he assumed initial leadership of OSU's new P-12 Project, a university-wide outreach initiative to support urban school improvement in Ohio. In 2005, he accepted a one-year appointment as research professor and director for the Teacher Quality Partnership, a consortium of 50 colleges and universities in Ohio.
A prolific author, Siedentop has published 12 books, several of which have been translated into Japanese, Korean, French and Spanish. His newest book, The Complete Guide to Sport Education, was published in 2004. The 7th edition of his Introduction to Physical Education, Fitness and Sport text was published in 2008. He has served as co-editor for six research monographs and published more than 80 refereed articles in well-known journals such as the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, Quest, the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, and the European Physical Education Review. Most recently, he authored the white paper for the Education Sector for the National Plan for Physical Activity which is due to be published in 2010.
His numerous awards and honors include the AAHPERD Alliance Scholar Award, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Curriculum and Instruction Academy Honor and Emeritus Awards, the Council on Physical Education Teacher Education Honor Award, and induction into the American Academy of Physical Education, the NASPE Hall of Fame, and The Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology Hall of Fame.
AAHPERD is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance, health promotion and education, and all specialties related to achieving a healthy lifestyle.
