Quality of specialty areas shows in USNews & World Report rankings

Best Graduate Schools 2011

The College of Education and Human Ecology continues to rise in the USNews & World Report annual survey rankings.

"We are pleased that we keep moving up among public universities, having progressed steadily from 10th to 7th place in only three years," said Cheryl Achterberg, dean of the College of Education and Human Ecology.

The graduate education program is 14th overall among all 279 institutions nationwide.

The recent survey provides data for prospective students to consider as they enroll at Ohio State for 2011-12.

Of the 11 Ohio State programs ranked in the top ten for their areas, six are in our college. They are administration and supervision, counseling and personnel services, curriculum and instruction, elementary education, secondary education, and vocational and technical education.

Additional categories move up

An additional four Ohio State education specialty areas are in the top 20, and all are making their way up the rankings.

Special education has jumped to 12th, an impressive move of eight places in three years. Rising three spots since the last survey is education psychology, now 13th. Higher education administration rose to 15th while education policy tied for 16th with the University of Illinois--Urbana-Champaign and the University of Southern California (Rossier).

"Ohio State's graduate-program rankings confirm the university's excellence across a broad range of academic endeavors," said E. Gordon Gee, president of The Ohio State University. "Equally important, however, is what numerical rankings cannot measure: Ohio State's profound commitment to expanding educational opportunity and improving our communities."

Data is only one indicator of quality

John Ryan, director of assessment for education and human ecology, said, "The USNews survey is just one indication of the college's impact. There is much more to what we do, especially our work to solve society's complex issues that have so much influence on what happens in schools."

"The value of a degree from Ohio State is reinforced by looking our alumni, who become leaders in education," Achterberg added.

The rankings are in the 2011 edition of America's Best Graduate Schools. A complete list is available at USNews & World Report (online subscription required).
