Two alumni were honored recently for their contributions to the College of Education and Human Ecology's teacher preparation programs. Sunday Smith Weakley and Timothy Dove received the 2011 Donald and Gail Anderson Award, which is given to current or former public K-12 school professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of education.

Weakley (BA '01 Human Development and Family Science, and MA '02 Family and Consumer Sciences), of Lewis Center, Ohio, is a family and consumer sciences teacher for Olentangy Liberty High School in the Olentangy Local School District.

She is known for supervising the Olentangy Teacher Academy, a hands-on program for high school seniors interested in careers in education. The two-semester, 160-hour field experience qualifies students for college credit at public universities in Ohio, as well as prepares them to enter a postsecondary teacher education program. In addition, Weakley advises the district's Future Educators of America chapter.

The Anderson Award was established in the College of Education and Human Ecology to honor Donald P. Anderson, a former dean and 26-year faculty and administrator of the College of Education, and his widow, Gail Anderson.

Anderson, who was dean of the College of Education, died in 1997. Anderson came to Ohio State in 1964 to assume the Associate Directorship of the University Council for Educational Administration. He joined the OSU Educational Administration faculty in 1967 and moved to the dean's staff a year later. He served progressively as Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, and Acting Dean before assuming the position of Dean in 1983. His deanship was characterized by a vigorous, articulate, and sensitive leadership style. He retired in 1992. He and his wife, Gail Anderson, established the Anderson Award to recognize current and former public K-12 educators who have made outstanding contributions to the college. He died in 1999.

Dove (MA '88 Educational Policy and Leadership), of Worthington, Ohio, is a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Phoenix Middle School, Worthington City Schools.

Named the 2011 Ohio Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Department of Education, Dove is known for helping conceive of Phoenix Middle School that has unusual features such as a lengthened day, mastery grading, a wellness program, parent forums and more.
