David Haury

For outstanding contributions to science education, including being founding editor of The Journal of Science Teacher Education and director of the ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education, the American Association for the Advancement of Science has named David L. Haury as a new Fellow.
Haury is associate professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education and Human Ecology. He is one of nine faculty members from The Ohio State University to be selected for AAAS fellowships in 2011.
Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee said, the nine "represent so many of the brightest stars in our constellation."
Haury's research focuses on teaching science through inquiry, the teaching of evolution in schools, and teacher understanding of the nature of science.
"I'm honored to be counted among this very distinguished group of scientists and educators who are recognized around the world as key innovators and leaders in their fields," said Haury. "It's especially gratifying since fellows are selected by their peers."
Haury is author of 80 professional publications, plus the lead author of a program guide and 32 teacher guides for a popular mathematics enrichment program for school students published by Daekyo in Seoul, Korea. As director of the ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education, formerly headquartered at Ohio State, he edited more than 108 peer-reviewed publications, including books, technical publications, and research digests.
In addition to his award-winning research, Haury is one of Ohio State's top principal investigators, bringing over $68 million in research funding to the university.
He has served as executive secretary of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, and has served on committees of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, the National Science Teachers Association, and the Ohio Academy of Science, among others. Haury regularly reviews manuscripts submitted for publication in the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and Science Education.
At the local level, Haury served as a consultant to the Ohio Board of Education during hearings associated with revisions of the state science standards. In the College of Education and Human Ecology, he formerly coordinated the STEM education area of study.
Haury also serves on review panels and contributes proposal workshop sessions for the National Science Foundation. He received his doctorate in higher education from The University of Washington.
Haury will be honored for his achievements during the annual meeting of the AAAS in Washington, D.C., in February. He will receive will receive a certificate and a blue and gold rosette as a symbol of his distinguished accomplishments from AAAS, the largest professional scientific organization in the world.
