One of the College of Education and Human Ecology’s own is returning to the Columbus campus on Friday, Nov. 18 when former dean Nancy L. Zimpher presents the 2011 Lena C. Bailey Lecture on Leadership.

Now the 12th chancellor of the State University of New York, Zimpher will present "When leaders articulate a theory of action: How organizations benefit" at 5:30 p.m. in 200 Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Avenue. A reception will follow.

Lena Bailey said, “The greatest skill of a leader lies in managing human relations.” When Zimpher was the guest for the 2004 Bailey Lecture, students were impressed by her willingness to listen, and by her relevant advice for reaching their career goals.

Zimpher, who has three degrees from Ohio State, is widely recognized in higher education, civic engagement, economic development and urban education reform. At Ohio State she was dean of the education college and executive dean of the professional colleges. In addition to SUNY, she has led the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Cincinnati. At all the institutions she took interesting approaches to meet higher education challenges. She developed The Milwaukee Idea vision, the UC/21 research plan, and the current Power of SUNY strategic plan.

Lena Bailey earned her Ph.D. from Ohio State in 1969, when she joined the university’s home economics faculty. She eventually became a college administrator, and led the transformation of the School of Home Economics into the College of Home Economics. She served as the college’s first dean until her retirement in 1992. She was an outstanding teacher, educator and visionary leader, beloved for always caring for those around her. She died in 1996.
