Content: Dr. Melgar-Quiñonez was interviewed by Jacob Adelman of the Associated Press. The story, about marketing beef to Hispanics, ran in multiple papers and on multiple web site, including the Houston Chronicle on June 13, 2006, the Rockford Register Star, the newspaper of Rockford, Illinois, on June 14, 2006, the Belleville News-Democrat (Illinois), the San Diego Union Tribune, and the Santa Fe New Mexican on June 15, and the web sites of Business Week, MSNBC, and KRGV, Texas.

Content: In a story titled "Revolving restaurants," reporter Emily Le Coz wrote about restaurants that opened, then closed. She cited Parsa's study, stating that the demands of long hours "mean that successful restaurant owners tend to be either single, divorced, or just extremely good at balancing family and work, according to a recent study by Ohio State University professor H.G. Parsa. Parsa, who teaches hospitality management, also found that between 57 to 61 percent of all restaurants fail within a three-year period. Franchise chains had a 57-percent failure rate; independents had 61."


MAY 2006

Faculty/Staff: OSU Kid Corps Book Drive participants

Content: Channel 4 highlighted the efforts of students in OSU Kid Corps, who have collected and are preparing to ship 4,900 books to hurricane-affected areas in the south. The station aired footage of the several of the students sorting and packing some of the thousands of children's books in their Ramseyer Hall headquarters. OSU Kid Corps is a project of the College of Human Ecology and is supported by funding from AmeriCorps.

Content: In "Couples Taking Time Tying the Knot," an article on the cover of the Metro & State section about couples marrying for the first time later in life, Montalto talks about marriage trends over the past century. "Our behavior looks a lot like it did in the early 1900s," said Montalto. "The 1950s and 1960s looks like an aberration when people started to marry a lot sooner. Then we turned it back up to a higher age of marriage."

Content: The Ohio State news release on Serovich's study titled "HIV-Positive Gay Men Rarely Regret Revealing Their Status to Friends, Family" appeared. Serovich and colleagues surveyed 76 HIV-positive gay men who have revealed their status to at least one friend, family member or acquaintance. They found that 75% of the men had little or no regret after revealing their status, and 80% of the participants' social networks were aware of their status.

Content: Lennon's research was featured in an article by Marshall Hood titled "Appearances matter: Shoppers who are well-dressed get better service, study confirms" about how consumers are treated differently based on the way they are dressed. Lennon said that sales associates believe how you are dressed is a status indicator as well as an indicator of how much money you are able to spend.


FEBRUARY 2006

Content: An article titled "Clerks give casual dressers the cold shoulder", highlights a recent study conducted by Lennon and alumna Minjeong Kim, professor of human sciences at Oregon State University, that examined how salespeople treat customers based on the type of clothing they wear. The article ran in the following 11 newspapers in the Canada West News Service group: National Post, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Windsor Star, Regina Leader-Post, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province, and Victoria Times-Colonist.

Content: Parsa was interviewed for an article titled "Filling a void: At Suzie's Grill it's all kosher all the time," about a newly opened restaurant in Houston that serves kosher foods. Content: Buettner was quoted in an article titled "Plans would load Veishea with nonalcoholic events" about Iowa State's plans to provide students with alternatives to off-campus parties during Veishea, an annual student-run celebration held each spring. Buettner said that there is not a lot of evidence that those types of events will attract the same students that big, out-of-control parties do.


JANUARY 2006

Content: Reporter Steve Volk interviewed Wilkinson about the likelihood that a new DVD titled "Close to Death" can change kids' attitudes about dealing drugs and violence. Wilkinson said kids will tend to focus on the most sensational aspects of any presentation.

Content: Greg Kurtz interviewed Coplin about the annual report by the Institute of Food Technologists in its magazine, Food Technology, about "What, When, and Where Americans Eat." The report reviews both healthy and unhealthy trends in eating. Coplin focused on advice to consumers about how to make healthful nutrition choices.

Content: Parsa was recognized along with six other Ohio State faculty members for receiving a Fulbright Scholar Award for the 2005-06 academic year. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars awards 800 of the grants each year to faculty and professionals to lecture and conduct research abroad.
