Margaret Buhr Smith-Morrison (BS '47, Home Economics), Columbus, OH, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2006. She was a member of Home Economists in Home & Community, and was recognized by the Upper Arlington City Council and Board of Zoning for her 19 years of service as one of the Silver Twins (so named by former Mayor Priscilla Mead) along with her friend Corrine Redick. Margaret's enthusiasm for The Ohio State University was contagious and a joy to her throughout her life.


June 2006

Sara Renee Gardner (BS 2000, Human Development and Family Science), Worthington, OH, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2006. She was an instructional aide at Worthington City Schools and a customer service specialist at the Andersons General Store.

College Mourns Loss of Textiles and Clothing Faculty Emerita Esther Meacham

Eunice Jones Wertenberger (BS '26, Home Economics), age 99, died February 20, 2006, at her home in Columbus, OH. After earning her degree, she taught home economics in Van Wert County, then Findlay, OH. She earned an MA in education with a major in nutrition from Columbia University by attending for four summers. She then taught home economics at Lakewood school districts near Cleveland where she met Marvin Wertenberger. The couple later moved to Columbus, where Marvin took a high school teaching position and Eunice joined the faculty of the School of Home Economics. She taught nutrition and foods courses for 20 years. In 1979, she established the Eunice J. Wertenberger Fund to support the Department of Human Nutrition. In 1996, the Human Ecology Alumni Society presented her with its Meritorious Service Award for her unflagging support of the college's quest for excellence. Contributions may be made in Eunice's memory to the Eunice J. Faculty Emerita Fern Hunt says, "Eunice was an honorary member of Phi U and attended meetings regularly, participating in special events of Gamma chapter. Although she had been ailing before Feb. 20, she attended the 2006 Founders' Day Brunch on Feb. 4. Many of her former students were there, and she thoroughly enjoyed visiting with them. She was especially thrilled that a scholarship award was given in her honor."

Ruth Morgan Crawford (BS '42, Home Economics Education), Anthem, AZ, died February 21, 2006, at the age of 84. After graduating from Ohio State, Ruth taught high school home economics, Latin, and physical education for several years in Bellevue, OH.

Virginia "Ginger" Lape Stephan (BS '53, Family Resource Management), Columbus OH, passed away on January 8, 2006. She was an active volunteer with her church and other organizations in Columbus.


2005

December 2005

Carroll Cook Lilly Mount (BS '41, Home Economics and Human Nutrition), Columbus, OH, wife of Ohio State Vice President and Professor Emeritus John T. Mount, passed away on December 5, 2005. She earned a fulltuition scholarship to Ohio State, after which she taught high school home economics for two years in Carey, OH. She served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant and dietitian from 1943-46. Mount was highly respected as a community leader and volunteer, receiving a National Organization for Women award in 1990 for her contributions to women's lives in Michigan and Arizona and her leadership in creating and managing a battered women's shelter in Midland, MI. She was a 57-year member of Philanthropic Educational Opportunities (PEO), a sisterhood that supports women in education, and served on the OSU Medical Service Board.

Faculty Emeritus and alumna Bea Cleveland, who knew Carroll well, says, "Carroll Cook Mount was an outstanding student leader in the School of Home Economics, College of Agriculture, and Ohio State during her college years of 1937-41. She continued her support of Ohio State as a leader in the Arizona OSU Alumni Club. Carroll was actively involved throughout her lifetime in organizations of her church, government, social work, and the arts. She was a lovely, well-informed lady who gave of herself as she strongly supported and was an advocate for the causes that counted and in which she believed. She will be sorely missed by many."

Margaret Victoria Danielson Richter, Columbus, OH, passed away on December 8, 2005. She was employed by the college in various staff positions starting in 1968 until her retirement in 1984. During this time, her responsibilities ranged from managing the household equipment laboratory to providing administrative support to the department chair and being the department fiscal officer. Retired OSU Extension Specialist Norma Pitts, president of Phi Upsilon Omicron Gamma Chapter, says, "Margaret was very active in Phi U for many years and especially noted for her long service as membership chair. She supported Gamma in numerous ways until her health decline. In 1998, she received the national Florence Fallgatter Alumni Award at Phi U Conclave in Fargo, ND.


October 2005

Katharine Evans Dawson (BS '36, Human Nutrition), Columbus, OH, died on October 3, 2005, at age 90. She was a lifelong resident of Clintonville, where she was very active in children's and youth activities, such as story telling, Girl Scouts, Brownies, church school, pre-school teacher, and various youth groups.


September 2005

Professor Emerita Mary Eloise Green (BS '28, Home Economics Education; MS '33, Human Nutrition and Food Management), Columbus, OH, passed away on September 16, 2005, at age 102. She went to Iowa State University at the urging of Director Gladys Branegan, where she taught on faculty and earned the PhD Degree in Human Nutrition in 1949 in two years. Back at the School of Home Economics at Ohio State, she taught food and nutrition for a total of 33 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the American and the Columbus Dietetic Associations; a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Science; member of the Institute of Food Technologists; Iota Sigma Pi - National Honor Society for Women in Chemistry; Kappa Omicron Nu, a home economics honor society; American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; and the Ohio Historical Society.


June 2005

Dorothy R. Dooper (BS '77 Textiles & Clothing) of Hilliard, OH, passed away June 9, 2005, at age 77 after an extended illness. Dorothy was a real estate agent in the Hilliard area for over 20 years.

Cleo Caroline Austin Herbert Klie (MS '87, Family Relations and Human Development), Upper Arlington, OH, died June 12, 2005, at age 84. She earned a BS in Political Science from Ohio State (cum laude; Phi Beta Kappa) in 1949 and served in the Navy Waves in WWII. She worked as an entrepreneur, as an educator for the Columbus Public Schools, and as an executive secretary for President Emeritus Novice G. Fawcett, among others, at Ohio State.


March 2005

Janice Mildred Bullock (BS '31, Home Economics Education), Columbus, OH, died on March 14, 2005, at age 95. She was retired from Monroeville Public Schools in Ohio after many years of teaching. She was a former member of the Board of the Crittendon Home.


January 2005

Faithe Hooks (BS '41, Human Nutrition and Food Management), Columbus, Ohio, passed away on January 21, 2005. She was active on the Human Ecology Alumni Society Executive Council as well as with the Phi U Gamma Alumni Chapter. In 1989, she retired as director of the Dietary Department at Mercy Hospital, now Columbus Community Hospital. In 1996, she was named one of the Top 100 Home Economists from Ohio State.

"I knew Faithe for 50 years, and she was a faithful supporter of Phi U and Home Economics," says Faculty Emerita Fern Hunt. "Faithe was the kind of person anyone would want as a friend and co-worker. She was steadfast in her professional commitment, her devotion to her family and her church, and her loyalty to friends. She was so capable, and she quietly cared and shared.

"Faithe valued her Home Economics education at Ohio State. Among other things, it enabled her to provide for and nurture her big family and to give of herself to the community."

Edith Melvin Allen (BS '53, Home Economics Education), Westerville, OH, died on January 30, 2005, at the age of 88. She taught nutrition and dietetics at Grant Hospital School of Nursing.

Human Ecology Mourns Passing of Professor Patrick McKenry

Phyllis Husson Stevning (BS, '51, Family and Human Development), of Dublin, OH, passed away on October 25, 2004, at the age of 76.

Eleanor Graebing Alderman (BS '37, Home Economics Education), 88, Mount Dora, FL, died Sunday, October 10, 2004.


June 2004

Sheryl Lynn Kraner (BS '85, Textiles & Clothing) of Powell, OH, died June 10, 2004, at the age of 42. She was a graduate of Capital University Law School and practiced law for Kraco Industries, specializing in business and contract law.

Marcella L. Robeson (BS '37, Home Economics) of Columbus, OH, died June 8, 2004, at the age of 89. She taught high school in Holmes and Knox Counties for 6 years, and then joined Ohio State where she worked for 30 years as dietitian and assistant to the director of Dormitory Food Services (1944-1975). During this time, she was also in charge of Food Service for summer school at both the OSU Stone Lab at Lake Erie for 22 years and the OSU Engineer's Camp at Zaleski, Ohio for 10 of those years.


May 2004

Margaret Jelen Flint (BS '50, Family and Human Development) died on May 1, 2004, at the age of 75 in Upper Arlington. She was a member of the Dublin Baptist Church and Phi Mu Sorority. Margaret and her husband, Herbert Flint, stayed in contact with Ohio State by being lifelong members of The Ohio State University Alumni Association.

Lillian Kemper Thrush (BS '39, Human Nutrition) of Melbourne, FL, died at the age of 87 on May 13, 2004. Upon receiving her degree from Ohio State, she taught kindergarten for the Columbus Public Schools for 17 years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Ohio and Florida Genealogical Societies.


April 2004

Carole Jean Henderson (BS '79, Home Economics) of Westerville, OH, died on April 26, 2004, at the age of 47 following a 4 ½ year battle with cancer. Upon graduating from Ohio State, she served as a nutritionist at Mount Carmel West Hospital before being employed at Discover Financial Services as an associate in business technology.


March 2004

Martha Evans Nielsen (BS '34, Home Economics) of Columbus, Ohio, died on March 26, 2004, at the age of 95. She was a former home economics teacher and was active in groups at The Ohio State University, especially when her husband was chairman of the Physics Department. She remained involved throughout her life.

Martha Jane "Marty" Coleman (BS '40, Home Economics), age 85 of Columbus, Ohio, died March 17, 2004. After receiving her degree from Human Ecology, she worked for many years at the Vision Center of Central Ohio. Upon retiring in 1982, Martha became involved in many community organizations.

Marguerite Trout Gayer (BS '30, Home Economics), age 97 of Columbus, Ohio, died March 6, 2004. Hailing from Brown County, her parents moved her to Georgetown, then Columbus, so she could be the first in her family to attend college. During her time here, she was active in 4-H, Wesley Foundation, Kappa Phi and was even a member of a championship meat-judging team for Ohio State. After marrying, Marguerite was involved with the Indianola United Methodist Church and helped develop a program to support literature and curricula for Sunday school teachers.


February 2004

Jean Owen Meacham (BS '58, Home Economics Education) of Powell, OH, died on February 20, 2004, after a 5-year battle with breast cancer. While attending OSU, she was very active in groups such as Omicron Nu and Mortar Board Honorary Society. After receiving her degree from the Department of Home Economics, Jean taught Home Economics and Guidance in the Upper Arlington schools, and then worked for the publication Highlights for Children until her retirement.

Linda Gerard Moore (BS '82, Textiles and Clothing), Cincinnati, OH, passed away on February 19, 2004, at the age of 47. After earning her degree from Ohio State, Linda also attended the Columbus College of Art and Design. During her career, she was a bank officer for Provident Bank.

Elgene Price Mowrey (BS '42, Home Economics Education) of Alexandria, OH, died on February 2, 2004. She was a member of the honoraries Scholaris, Phi Upsilon Omicron, and Omicron Nu at OSU, and after receiving her degree, was active throughout her lifetime in the Alexandria community. She was a home economics teacher at Pickerington High School, clerk of the Board of Education for the Alexandria Public Schools and Northridge School District, and a mathematics and science teacher at Heath Middle School, from which she retired.


January 2004

Mary Kathryn Bell Ericksen (BS '75, MS '77, both in Textiles & Clothing) of Bloomsburg, PA, died January 16, 2004, at the age of 66. Upon completing her master's degree, she accepted a teaching position with Ohio State, serving as Logan County Cooperative Extension agent for 4-H. Later, she became head of Fashion and Merchandising, Department of Business, at Virginia Intermont College, and then pursued a PhD at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Upon completion, she became program chair for Fashion Merchandising at Southwest Texas State University, working her way up to assistant chair, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. She then moved to Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania where she was promoted to professor, tenured, and elected chair of the Department of Marketing, the position she held upon retirement in August 2003.

Grace King Postle (BS '28, Home Economics) of Hilliard, OH, died on January 26, 2004. After graduating from what was then the Department of Home Economics, she served a dietetic internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, then worked as a dietitian at Mt. Carmel Hospital. At age 65, she entered the Peace Corps and served 2 years in India.

Alberta Wolf Sauer (BS '68, Home Economics Education) of Columbus, OH, died on January 11, 2004, after a 2-year battle with brain cancer. She graduated from Human Ecology summa cum laude, then worked during her career for Sterling Paper Co., Fort Howard Paper Co., Cottingham Paper Co., and, most recently, National Paper and Packaging Co.

December 2003

LaRoux Roebuck Mentz (BS '37, Textiles and Clothing) of Gahanna, OH, passed away December 25, 2003. While at OSU, she was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron. La Roux was well-known as the founder and editor of the Rocky Fork Enterprise and founder of the Rocky Fork Printing Co.

Burnis McKinstry Kennedy (BS '26, Home Economics Education) of Worthington, OH, died on December 7, 2003. After receiving her degree, Burnis went on to start the first home economics program for girls in Beverly, OH. In the 1940s, she and her husband went to North Carolina where Burnis taught at Indian high schools. After retirement, she resided in Worthington and worked almost full-time making various crafts.


October 2003

Karen A. Darnbrough (BS '66, Textiles and Clothing) of Worthington, OH, died on October 19, 2003. She was the office manager for D.K.Buck Co. After graduating from Ohio State, she was an assistant buyer for F & R Lazarus and was in charge of merchandising at Recreations Maternity Stores for 15 years.


September 2003

Mary Armstrong Andrian (BS '47, MS '61, Home Economics Education) of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on September 30, 2003, after an extended illness. She retired in 1988 after serving more than 40 years in the teaching profession. She taught for 27 of those years in the Department of Home Economics Education. As an undergraduate, Adrian received a 4-year scholarship to Ohio State. The College of Agriculture and Home Economics administered a competitive exam for these scholarships, and she was the first female student at Ohio State to win one. She was also the first female from Ashland County, Ohio, to receive such a scholarship. Because of the support she received, in 1985, she and her husband Tom established a named scholarship to help other students from Ashland County.

Orena M. Haynes (BS '41, Home Economics; MS '57, Textiles & Clothing) of Pataskala, OH, passed away on September 14, 2003. As an OSU Extension agent from 1944-57, then a state specialist in Textiles and Clothing until her retirement in 1977, Professor Emerita Haynes was well known statewide and was greatly appreciated for her many contributions to OSU Extension and the College.


May 2003

Eleanor Gradwohl Maxwell (MS '56, Textiles and Clothing), Columbus, OH, passed away on May 26, 2003. Her master's advisor was Lois Gilmore. Eleanor taught for 2 years at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, then returned to Columbus to marry Robert Maxwell. For the next 2 years, she alternately taught and assisted on staff at her alma mater. She then worked as a teacher's aide while her three daughters were in grade school. In addition, the Maxwells were foster parents for 15 years and provided emergency and long-term care for more than 200 children. Eleanor served the Ohio Home Economics Association, becoming known statewide as its first executive secretary and newsletter editor from 1965-1974. In 1995, Eleanor retired from the patient transportation unit at Ohio State's Dodd Hall.


April 2003

Faye Elizabeth Cornelius Madaffer (BS '48, Home Economics Education) of Columbus passed away on April 29, 2003. She retired from Lazarus in 1977 after many years of managing the Chintz and Buckeye Rooms at the downtown store and later opening the Eastland mall restaurant. She was a long-time member of the Friends of the OSU Historic Costume & Textiles Collection and attended every event that they presented.

Marguerite "Margie" McNulty Hullinger (BS '45 Home Economics Education) of Newark, Ohio, died on April 19, 2003. She enjoyed teaching art and home economics at Ben Franklin Junior High School in Newark and was active in a number of organizations, including the Licking County Home Economics Association.

Mary Ann Grossman Arthur (BS '54, Human Nutrition) of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on March 8, 2003. She is survived by husband William E. Arthur, an alumnus of the College of Business. They have been staunch Ohio State supporters.


January 2003

Dorothy Thompson Taber (PhD '69, Human Nutrition) of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away in January 2003. In 1986, her family created the Taber-Thompson Fellowship Fund in her honor to provide doctoral fellowships, with preference for students in Human Nutrition. During her years as a professor in human nutrition at Case Western Reserve University, as well as after her retirement, Taber gave generously to this fund. Yet she modestly asked that no publicity appear during her lifetime.

Pauline Brooks Mise (MS '53, Human Nutrition) of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away on July 25, 2001. She retired from teaching at Bellefontaine High School in 1983 and, as her son Gregory says, was very fond of Ohio State.


1999

December

Edith Murphy Pool (BS '42, Home Economics Education) of Takoma Park, Maryland, died December 9, 1999, at the age of 80. She worked as a librarian at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Columbia, Maryland, for 25 years until her retirement.
