Message from the Dean:
Labs in Life @ COSI benefiting community

Cheryl AchterbergMillie Adams ('80 MS, Human Nutrition) wrote to COSI's CEO David Chesebrough and me recently describing how she used our nutrition and physical performance Labs in Life as a teaching tool.

She lauded our knowledgeable researchers and their skill in explaining the sophisticated equipment at Labs in Life to help high school athletes understand the connection between good nutrition and improved sports performance. We thank Adams for writing!

Please read her letter, which she generously shares, to see how nutritionists, coaches, parents, students, teachers, and more can benefit from Labs in Life @ COSI.

Cheryl Achterberg, Dean

EHE majors touted by CNN, CareerBuilder

"10 unusual majors" lead to fulfilling careers, according to a recent article at CNN.com. The good news is, thanks to our holistic approach to solving societal problems, eight are offered by your college. You may be in one of the careers!

First is family and consumer sciences (our consumer sciences, human development and family science, and family and consumer sciences education), which the article says gives plenty of options for careers. No. 3 is recreation management. Food science -- including dietetics and nutrition -- is no. 4.

Several of our faculty explore topics related to criminology, no. 6. Many of our graduates enter social work related areas, no. 7.

Our emphasis on urban issues fits with no. 8, urban studies. Our science education program is of interest for no. 9, natural resources. And the final major, gerontology -- the welfare of the aged -- is part of our lifelong learning and living focus.

So the next time a young person muses about his/her future, say, "Have I got a major for you!"
