EHE In Touch - September 2011

Message from the Dean:
Farewell to quarters

Cheryl AchterbergAs we enter the last autumn quarter at Ohio State, I am proud to report that the EHE freshman class coming to the Columbus campus holds great promise.

An impressive 56 percent of these freshmen graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school classes

Also notable, 91.8 percent of our incoming freshmen graduated in the top 25 percent of their classes. We know they are excited to begin their studies, as you were once upon a time.

Next year in autumn, we will begin semesters. Conversion is complete in our college, and we expect to share details about positive changes in the coming months. Please watch your e-mailbox for EHE In Touch.

Cheryl Achterberg, Dean

Joan Gaudion McKinneyDegrees: MS '95 Human Development and Family Science (HDFS), Ohio State; MA '84 Folk Studies, Western Kentucky University

Current Role: Early Intervention Specialist, OSU/Nisonger Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Early Childhood Education

At the Nisonger Center, I work with families, helping them define and reach the best outcomes for infants and toddlers with special needs. All my work draws on my HDFS studies with a Special Education cognate area. As a GRA with the Transition to Motherhood Project, I began building my skill in observing interactions between mothers and young children. I am proud of receiving a 2005-06 Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs grant that expanded my ability to improve children's lives using adapted technology.

Interesting Fact: While student teaching at the A. Sophie Rogers Lab School in Campbell Hall, I studied with visiting teachers from Reggio Emilia, Italy, who shared their philosophy about how children demonstrate what they know--called "The Hundred Languages of Children."
