College Inducts Seven into EHE Hall of Fame

David Andrews looks on as Catherine Montalto congratulates one of our EHE Hall of Fame inductees.

Seven honorees received the college's highest honor for alumni and former faculty and administrators on November 2, 2007.

One of the seven transformed the field of physical education. Two pioneered the application of general systems theory in the social sciences. Another has been a university chancellor and president. Yet another reforms schools. The sixth is a legend in her own time in Ohio State 4-H, and the seventh won national recognition as president of an academic honorary.

Andrews Recognized for Impact on Children and Families,
Returns to Faculty to Focus on Child-Centered Projects

David Andrews with child Former dean David W. Andrews received the 2007 National Child Advocacy Award on November 19, 2007, from the Godman Guild for his passion, vision, and leadership in early childhood education and care.

In February 2008, you are invited to attend the ceremony given by Central Ohio's Champions of Children Fund where Professor Andrews will receive the Champion of Children Award.

Lena C. Bailey Lecture on Leadership Delivered by University President/Engineer

Everyone is a leader in some aspect of his or her life. Explore the three dimensions of leadership with David Ashley, president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who delivered the 2007 Lena C. Bailey Lecture on Leadership.

Not many engineers lead major universities. Ashley, who is also the former dean of Ohio State's College of Engineering, is the exception.

Ohio State Wins Regional Magrath/Kellogg Award for Transformational Partnerships

Magrath/Kellogg Award Public universities across the nation competed for the prestigious 2007 Magrath/Kellogg Outreach Award. The college played a major role in Ohio State's receipt of the award for best outreach project in the region and designation as finalist in the national award competition.

In the award-winning project, the college serves as a catalyst in powerful public/private partnerships that are the first in the nation to create a network of laboratory schools in the community covering infancy through grade 12.

Two super spaces in that building were dedicated this past autumn: the Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Iden Student Lounge and the Dr. W. Michael Sherman Exercise Physiology Lab.

Faculty and Alumni Fight Food Insecurity, aka Hunger,
in Ohio and around the World

Hugo Melgar-Quiñonez and David HolbenMore than 850 million undernourished people struggle to survive worldwide. From Latin America to Asia, Assistant Professor Hugo Melgar-Quiñonez, Human Nutrition, is fast becoming recognized as an expert in measuring household food insecurity. Measurement helps target support to the people most in need. Read about Melgar-Quinonez's international collaborations to test valid, reliable measurement tools.

Alumnus David Holben (MS '95, PhD '96, Human Nutrition), faculty at Ohio University, wants to prevent food insecurity in Appalachia. Read about his trip as a Fulbright Scholar to study food security strategies that can help in southeastern Ohio.

Both Melgar-Quiñonez and Holben, who have worked together, were invited commentators on food insecurity in a recent Journal of the American Medical Association article.

Expert Advances Thought-Provoking Ideas on Educational Reform

Phillip C. Schlechty Three-time alumnus Phillip C. Schlechty (BS '60, MA '63, PhD '67, all Education) knows how to keep an audience intrigued with his ideas about educational reform. As founder and CEO of the Center for Leadership in School Reform, he is one of the most sought after school reform consultants in the U.S. and Canada.

On Nov 2, 2007, Schlechty visited the college to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. During the afternoon, he addressed alumni, staff, and students in an exclusive seminar.

Breaking Up Is Hard to Do Whether You're Married or Cohabiting

broken heartThe U.S. Census shows that 5.5 million nonmarried couples lived together in the U.S. in 2002, a more than 1,000 percent increase since 1970.

At least 40% of today's children will live in a "cohabiting-parent family" during their youth. This makes family researcher Claire Kamp-Dush ask how scholars should change the way they conduct research on family structure.

Read about her study, which is among the first to report a negative effect from the breakup of cohabiting couples.

Inspired Teachers of Writing, Inspired Students

Kevin Cordi and a workshop participant at a computer Middle school teacher Jennifer Joseph was an enthusiastic participant in the Columbus Area Writing Project's Summer Institute. "Writing has always been a central focus in my classroom, but after the summer program, I find it has blossomed into something greater for my students."

Directed by Professors David Bloome and George Newell, School of Teaching and Learning, the project will offer its regular Summer Institute this coming summer plus Advanced Summer Institutes on topics such as multimodal (computer-based) composition and teaching writing for social justice.

In this issue, we introduce two seasoned alumni whose career successes demonstrate the benefits of our degree programs in education and human ecology.

Wendy GoldsteinWendy Goldstein,
BS and MS, Textiles and Clothing, 1975 and 1981

Career: Owner - Costume Specialists, Inc., Columbus, Ohio

Professionally: Costume Specialists, Inc., manufactures and manages corporate logo walk-around costumes and children's book characters internationally. A few examples are: Michelin Man, Kool Aid Man, Curious George, and Brutus Buckeye, and we have many more. We work with clients such as Nickelodeon, Sesame Street, and Sony. We are one of the very few companies in the country that produces high-quality costumes for business use. I use my design and business background from my fashion merchandising degree every day. I am one of those lucky people who gets to make a living with my passion!!

Interesting fact: I tried to design my own major in Costume Design as an undergrad and was told that I couldn't make a living doing that so was directed to Textiles and Clothing. Never give up your dream!!


Joy Garrison CauffmanJoy Garrison Cauffman
BS '48, Education; MA '53, Physical Education; PhD, '59, Health Education and Administration

Career: Professor Emerita, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, with 30 years service.

Professionally: A Branchester, Ohio, native and a California resident, I was a health and fitness consultant to three U.S. presidents and have conducted numerous medical research studies with contracts and grants from public and private sources. I have lectured worldwide. Recently, I received the Republican Senatorial American Spirit Medal. I also cherish my recent honorary memberships from Branchester's Boy Scouts of America Troop 47 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7484.

Interesting fact: While Assistant Director of Health and Physical Education for Columbus Public Schools, Novice Fawcett was the Superintendent. He encouraged me to obtain my PhD. When I received the PhD from The Ohio State University, Nov was President and he hooded me.
