ColLABoration : FAQ
Answers to frequently asked questions.
New projects and forms of collaboration are considered in an ongoing basis. COSI's four themes that guide their development in the next few years are:1. Technology and Innovation, 2. Early Childhood education, 3. Energy and Environment and 4. Health and Medicine. Many projects can fit within these broad themes, each proposed project will be reviewed by a COSI panel for feasibility, and fit within COSI's mission and plan. Once a topic is accepted for a COSI partner project, further discussions will include timelines and responsibilities of the partners.
There are many routes to interaction with the public available at COSI. In a partnership, the partner would provide content and COSI would provide program development. Some avenues for dissemination of information to the public include:
- Electronic experts and other electronic programs, broadcast to schools statewide.
- Family workshops.
- Student workshops. Opportunities for students to explore topics in further depth, these are sometimes enhanced by OSU researchers. COSI works to support teachers in providing programs that are in line with the school science standards.
- Teacher workshops. While students explore COSI, presentations are given to teachers that contribute to their professional development and enhance their ability to teach STEM+H topics.
- Parenting classes.
- Young child events, focused programs offered through Little Kid's Space.
- Grade level days. As schools visit COSI throughout the year, specific days and programs are focused on individual grade levels.
- Public lectures. Evening lectures are given to adult audiences on topics of science and science policy.
- Camp-in programs. Targeted groups participate in workshop sessions and stay overnight in the science center.
- Science carts. Science carts provide for individual interaction between the visitor and a COSI staff member. These are set up in the halls of COSI during daytime hours. A COSI person conducts a demonstration that includes visitor interaction and questioning.
- COSI on Wheels. Specific programs are taken to schools by a van and presented on site.
- Science shows. Presentations given on stages throughout the building. COSI is well known for specific programs presented including the Electrostatic Generator show and Rat Basketball.
- Family Friday Night events. With a discounted entry fee for a Friday evening, programs are offered to attract new audiences to COSI. Some partners have used the FFN time slot as a limited period of time to test run a program or to question an audience.
- COSI University opportunities. Ongoing educational programs are offered to COSI staff and volunteers to enhance their knowledge in areas of science and to enhance their career experiences. Recent topics have included programs on environmental issues and the science behind climate change as well as informative programs on initiatives taken elsewhere in the city.
- Special focused day or weekend events such as Girls Explore Engineering, Big Machines, Farm Days, and the Physics Festival.
- Programs to enhance diversity and opportunities for under served populations.
