Clinical field placements are an important aspect of many of Ohio State's teacher preparation programs. Whether a one-hour observation or full-time student teaching, these experiences are enlightening, enriching, and valuable.
Each program has a program manager or a faculty member who is responsible for making decisions on the particulars of each of their students' placements. However, the Schools and Agencies Network serves as the liaison between the school district or agency in helping each program secure approval for the field placement. Program managers or faculty are required to submit desired field placements on the Field Experience template (Excel) . This template should be submitted to Lauren Malitz at least four weeks prior to the start date of the field experience.
The Ohio State University Educator Preparation Unit requires any student engaged in a field placement experience involving children or youths (of any length or purpose) to complete a background check (pdf) from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCII) prior to entering a school setting. Each student is required to have BOTH the BCI&I and the FBI Web checks completed regardless of the number of years living in the state of Ohio. Students who have been convicted of a crime should see the information supplied by The Ohio Department of Education on its standards for licensure (pdf).
In addition to the background check, students must submit an application for field experience (pdf) as well as a current resume.
IMPORTANT: TB (tuberculosis) tests are only required for placements in the Grandview Heights and Whitehall districts.
All documents must be received by the Schools and Agencies Network office before the placement is requested.
It is the responsibility of the program coordinator or faculty member to gather all documents from each student and submit them as a whole cohort to Lauren Malitz , 185 Arps Hall, 1945 North High Street, (614) 247-6545 or lmalitz@ehe.osu.edu. Once she has all the documents, the placements can then be requested. The packet must include a roster for the course that is requesting the placements. Individual student documents will not be accepted.
Note: Field placement approval process does not guarantee the educator preparation candidate future employment or approval for licensure, as those decisions are made outside of the purview of this institution.
