The purpose of this course is to help students gain the skills needed to assist persons with disabilities in the selection and use of adaptive and assistive technology (AT). The key words here are "to assist persons with disabilities"; the selection and use of the technology should be the responsibility of the consumer, to the greatest extent possible.
Students will learn where to find information on technology, to evaluate a person's technology needs, and to identify how and where to procure AT. Students will analyze factors needed to integrate technology into the lives of persons with disabilities and identify variables related to successful application. Legal, ethical, and funding issues will be addressed. Assistive technology in the following functional areas will be emphasized: (a) communication, (b) learning (e.g., math, reading, and writing), (c) mobility, and (d) computer applications.

Description: The Strategies For A Successful Classroom course is designed for young teachers in the Columbus Public Schools. The purpose of the course is to offer sessions that are directly aligned with issues young teachers face in Columbus. The first half of the weekly sessions will be used to present information about the weekly topic to ensure that the participants have a theoretical understanding of the theme, and why it is important to their work in Columbus Public Schools. The second half of each class session will offer opportunities for teachers to address their individual concerns related to the weekly topic. It is intended that the teachers have time to discuss their concerns in small groups, receive suggestions and feedback from course instructors, and that they leave with practical ideas to take back to their classrooms.
Start Date: January 9
Instructor(s): CPS PAR Consulting teachers
Description:
Research clearly shows that schools and classrooms that consistently use data to inform instructional practice have higher student achievement. There is evidence that in many schools and classroom teachers are choosing not to use existing data. Their reluctance to do so may be grounded in a lack of understanding of how to apply it to everyday teaching and learning. Unfortunately, many educators never received basic training in their college preparation, and many who did may need a refresher course. The purpose of this course is twofold:
To acquaint (or re-acquaint) educators with the basic concepts and terminology needed to hold meaningful conversations about data directly related to student achievement, leading to informed instructional decisions for improving student performance.
To develop a cadre of educators skilled at using value-added data to inform their classroom instruction, resulting in improved student achievement.
This course will be a combination of online and 10 face-to-face meetings and will occur over two quarters: Winter, 2007 and Spring, 2007.
Start Date: January 9
