Dr. Janet Buckworth completed her Ph.D. in Exercise Psychology at the University of Georgia in 1993, where she studied physiological mechanisms for modifications in responses to mental stress after exercise training. Her academic and professional background include masters' degrees in clinical social work and health education and work experiences in medical and college settings. Dr. Buckworth approaches physical activity behavior from a psychobiological perspective. She addresses the interaction among behavior, physiology, and psychology to understand exercise adoption and adherence and the effects of physical activity on mental health. Her specific research interests include the application of stage models and other psychosocial theories of behavior to physical activity, the relationship between exercise and mental health, and the influence of psychobiological factors, such as perception of effort and personality traits, on exercise adherence. Dr. Buckworth recently completed a three-year NIH funded research project focused on exercise adherence in college students.
Dr. Buckworth has several publications in the area of Exercise Psychology. Additionally, she also has a chapter on behavior modification in the fourth edition of the Health/Fitness Instructor's Handbook and is the lead author on the textbook, Exercise Psychology, to be published by Human Kinetics in 2002.
Dr. Buckworth teaches courses on exercise behavior change and exercise physiology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, she instructs a section on neuroscience of exercise and mental health in the Ph.D. seminar series.
