Applying to a Graduate Program in
PAES
Applying to one of the
8 graduate programs in PAES
is a multi-step process. Prospective students must apply to both the
Graduate School at Ohio State and the specified program(s). Be sure to
identify the correct PAES program in all correspondence relating to your
application. The 8 PAES programs are:
Special Education (M.A and
Ph.D.)
Sport & Exercise Education (MA. and Ph.D.)
Sport & Exercise Humanities (M.A. and Ph.D.)
Sport & Exercise Science (MA and Ph.D.)
Sport & Exercise Management
(M.A and Ph.D.)
Counselor Education (MA. and Ph.D.)
School Psychology (MA. and Ph.D.)
Workforce Development & Education (MA. and Ph.D.)
All programs admit for only the Autumn Quarter. The
application deadline for all 8 graduate programs is January 15th. All
materials must be submitted by this date for full consideration. For those
domestic students who wish to be considered for a University Fellowship, the
deadline to submit all materials is January 1st. International
students who wish to be considered for a University Fellowship must submit
all materials by November 30th. Due to the large volume of
applications, PAES applicants are encouraged to submit applications
before the deadlines.
Step 1
Apply to The Graduate School
As of September 2004, the only way to apply to The Graduate School is
through their online application process at http://gradapply.osu.edu. When
completing the online application, remember to note the program (and
specialization) within PAES
to which you are applying. If you have questions about the online
process or run into trouble with it, please contact Graduate Admissions (614-292-9444).
Submit the following to Graduate Admissions:
-
Completed Graduate School Application
*only online applications accepted.
-
Application fee ($40 for domestic students; $50
for international students). The fee will not be waived or paid for by
PAES.
-
Official transcripts from all previous college
work not completed at The Ohio State University (in a sealed envelope).
This includes all work that was transferred.
-
GRE scores (within 5 years) from the Educational
Testing Service (ETS). You may
register for the exam through the GRE website.
Only scores from the general exam are needed. The OSU Office of Testing is an official testing site:
614-292-2241.
*Most successful applicants admitted score at least 1000 for a
combined verbal and quantitative score and 4.0 on the writing section.
International Applicants only:
-
TOEFL or MELAB scores are required of an
international applicant where the native language is not English. Exceptions
are listed on the Graduate School application.
-
A completed
Affidavit of Financial Support
and supporting financial documentation is
also required of all admitted international students, only if funding from
the graduate program is not offered. This can be obtained with the
Graduate Application materials.

Step 2
Apply to PAES
Applying to specific programs within PAES requires
submitting additional information directly to the PAES Admissions Coordinator. All of the following
materials must be submitted to the PAES Office of Student Services by the previously mentioned
deadlines:
-
A signed Statement of Intent outlining your goals
for the program and your intended area of concentration. This is
usually one to two pages in length. Be sure to specify any
specializations you have or research that interests you.
School
Psychology applications should follow this guideline: Statement
of Intent (PDF)
-
Three letters of recommendation and
Reference Forms. These can be obtained
here.
-
Resume or
Vita
-
A copy of all transcripts showing previous
college-level work is also requested.
-
For applicants to Sport & Exercise Science only:
Personal Inventory application. Download here.
-
For applicants to Sport & Exercise
Humanities: A sample of previous
academic writing (for a course or for publishing)

Step 3
Financial Support
Graduate students in the School of Physical Activity
& Educational Services have a number of opportunities to fund their studies.
In addition to utilizing loans and awards through the Office of Financial
Aid, many students secure Graduate Assistantships and Scholarships.
-
Graduate
Assistantships
Many students seek to fund their education by obtaining a graduate
administrative assistantship. Faculty make decisions about the limited
number of positions in the School of PAES only after deciding upon
admission. An updated resume is all that is needed to be considered.
Positions that may be located outside of the School of PAES will need to be
applied for directly with the department that may be offering them.
The Office of Student Financial Aid website is a good place to start in
looking for such positions.
-
Sport. Fitness & Health Program Graduate Teaching
Associate Application (.pdf)
You will need to print and mail this application form to the Admissions
and Recruitment Coordinator.
SFHP is a scholarly program of the School of PAES in
which over 150 physical activity and health behavior classes are taught each year.
Roughly 85% of all SFHP classes are taught by Graduate Teaching Associates
in PAES, primarily from the Sport & Exercise related programs.
-
The Office of Student Financial Aid can also be of
assistance.

Education and Human Ecology Scholarship Process
2007-2008 EHE Scholarship Applications are
now available
-
The University Fellowship Competition
is an option for some applicants. The criteria for eligibility is
usually based upon GRE scores and undergraduate GPA. It is the
responsibility of the School to nominate students -- no additional
application is needed. Please note that the University Fellowship
Competition is different than a graduate assistantship. The two are
often confused.
Step 4
Review Your Application and Check Your Status
There are a few tips to remember during and after
completing the application to PAES that will make the process go quickly and smoothly.
-
Your Social Security Number is used by OSU as your
official applicant identification number. It is helpful to include that
number somewhere on all correspondence sent to the University. If any
transcripts have additional names (married names, maiden names, etc.),
please note that on all documents.
-
Correctly identify the program to which you would
like to apply. There are distinct differences between programs and between
degrees within programs (i.e. MA vs. Ph.D.).
-
As Graduate Admissions and PAES
receive your application materials, applicant status is updated on a
website. Your status can be checked at
http://appstatus.osu.edu.
-
Consider the mission and focus of each program and
think about how your own research interests fit with that mission. Every
faculty member for each program has listed his/her areas of interest in the
program information on this website.
-
When having letters of recommendation completed,
be sure to choose at least one current or former faculty member who can speak to your
academic abilities in the classroom.
-
There is not a "cut-off" minimum
GRE score
used in the PAES admissions process. It is only one piece of the entire
application but should be taken seriously. PAES programs are generally
looking for at least a score of 1000 (combined verbal and quantitative
sections) and 4.0 on the writing section. Most successful applicants
prepare for it with the CD- ROM practice tests found in many test prep
books.
-
Submit your application materials well before
published deadlines. With applications to graduate school increasing
at OSU, don't let your materials get buried in the process.
Plan ahead and save a copy of all that you submit. PAES applicants should
set a personal deadline of early December for completing the application.
-
The minimum required undergraduate and graduate
cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is 3.0. Graduate Admissions determines
your GPA based upon ~ transcripts from all previous college work. Those
applicants with below a 3.0 GPA may be considered for conditional admission
if the specific program requests it and the Dean of the Graduate School
approves it.
