Fellowships

In general to qualify, students must have over a 3.5 GPA and achieve a top 75th percentile average on the GRE. If you are interested in a fellowship, please indicate this on your application. The School of Physical Activity & Educational Services is responsible for nominating our best applicants to the university wide competition. Graduate Associateship's (GA's) at The Ohio State University

Types of Graduate Associateships at Ohio State

  • Graduate Administrative Associate (GAA)
  • Graduate Research Associate (GRA)
  • Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA)

Students may obtain GA positions from a number of different employers within the university. For example:

  • Academic or service units within PAES
  • Academic or service units outside of PAES
  • PAES faculty with funded grants
  • Other Ohio State faculty with funded grants

There is no central posting service for GA positions at The Ohio State University. However, PAES frequently receives GA announcements from other departments and service units across campus that are distributed via email to all current students and those who have accepted admittance to a PAES graduate program. Typically, applicants are asked to submit an updated resume or vita and cover letter. Depending on the type of position, you may also need to submit references and writing samples. Potential candidates are often interviewed for the position as well.

In general, in exchange for 20 hours of work per week, GA positions provide paid tuition, paid health insurance (up to 85%) and a monthly stipend. The hiring unit sets the amount of additional fees covered and the monthly stipend.

Graduate Associateships (GA's) in the School of Physical Activity & Educational Services

PAES offers several GTA positions through the Sport, Fitness, and Health Program (SFHP). SFHP is a scholarly program within the School of PAES in which over 150 physical activity and health behavior classes are taught each year. Roughly, 85% of all SFHP courses are taught by GTA's enrolled in a PAES graduate program. To be eligible to teach an SFHP course you must be a current graduate student in PAES and obtain a minimum score of 500 quantitative/500 verbal on the general GRE. While most GTA's teaching SFHP courses are enrolled in Sport & Exercise Science related programs, a graduate student enrolled in any of the eight PAES graduate programs can apply. If you are interested in one of these positions please submit an SFHP GTA Application. Applications are due December 1st.

PAES often has many GA positions outside of the SFHP program which are posted as needed. To qualify for GA position within the College of Education & Human Ecology, a minimum score of 500 quantitative/500 verbal on the general GRE must be achieved. If you have accepted admission to a PAES program you will receive notices of GA positions as they become available throughout PAES and the rest of the University. However, it never hurts to be proactive by seeking GA positions on your own around campus.
