Program Purposes, Goals, and Objectives

Sport and Leisure Studies is designed to prepare graduates for expanding career opportunities in sport and leisure services. Specific objectives of this program are to provide an appropriate series of courses and experiences to enable graduates to successfully enter teaching, leadership, and supervisory positions in the sport and leisure industry or seek admission to graduate programs in socio-cultural aspects of sport and sport management.

Career opportunities vary. In the public sector, careers include leadership, supervisory, and administrative positions in municipal and other tax-supported recreation departments. Private leisure providers include companies that provide goods and services such as equipment, facilities, consultation, instruction, and information for profit. To be eligible for Ohio Provisional Teacher Licensing, students must successfully complete the Physical Education Teacher Education strand, the Praxis Core Battery tests in General Knowledge and Professional Knowledge, and the Praxis Specialty Area test in physical education.

At The Ohio State University, Sport Management is only offered as a graduate degree. This is true for many of top, world-class Sport Management programs across the country. Therefore, the newly designed Sport Leadership & Sport Humanities strand was designed to give students excellent preparation for a career in the sports industry and to prepare them for success in graduate programs such as Sport & Exercise Management, Sport & Exercise Humanities, and Law. The critical thinking and writing skills that will be developed in this strand of the major make our students very marketable for such programs.
