About our Program

The Ph.D. in Physical Education prepares graduates to become members of the professoriate and enables them to 1) prepare physical education teachers and adapted physical education specialists, 2) conduct and disseminate educational research, and 3) provide leadership in sport pedagogy.

Program of Study; Ph.D. Degree in Physical Education

Doctoral students in Physical Education need to complete a minimum of 135 quarter hours of coursework. Students with master's degrees can typically transfer 45 credit hours of master's coursework into their Ph.D. program.

The Doctoral Advisory Committee guides the student through successful completion of the required Candidacy Examination. The Dissertation Committee then works with the student through completion of the dissertation. The topic for the dissertation is chosen in conjunction with the student's Dissertation Committee. Students are encouraged to develop a portion of their dissertation research in the form of a co-authored article with their advisor to be submitted for publication.

A major purpose of the doctoral program is to help students acquire skills and predispositions to become contributors to the expanding knowledge base in sport pedagogy. Students are expected to acquire research skills through apprenticeship experiences in the dissertation research of peers and through cooperative research projects with faculty. At least one publishable research project in conjunction with the advisor is expected prior to completion of the dissertation.
