140.10 WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER
DESCRIPTION: Wilderness medicine differs significantly
from standard first aid courses (i.e. Red Cross) that are oriented toward urban
environments. In this minimum 72 hour course you will learn to deal with medical
emergencies when help is hours or days away and calling 911 is not an option.
This course will help you prepare for emergency situations that involve
prolonged patient care and transport, severe environments, and improvised gear.
CONTENT: Topics include patient assessment, body systems, equipment
improvisation, trauma, environmental medicine, toxins, backcountry medicine, and
wilderness rescue.
PREREQUISITES: Students must be at least 16 years of age (16 & 17 year olds must
have proof of parental consent).
CERTIFICATION: All students who successfully complete the WFR course will
receive a certification card from Wilderness Medical Associates. This
certification must be re-certified every three years. This WFR course meets or
exceeds all requirements in the National First Responder curriculum. BLS-CPR
certification is included.
CLASS FORMAT: 72 hours, over 8 days. Classes are fast-paced with an emphasis on
practical skills. Mornings are devoted to lectures, while afternoons and
evenings are spent outdoors working on practical hands-on full scale rescue
simulations. Simulations are video-taped and debriefed for enhanced learning.
CREDENTIALS: Instruction provided by Wilderness Medical Associates. Wilderness
Medical Associates' courses are preferred by such organizations as Outward
Bound, The National Park Service, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the FBI. As
Canoe Magazine stated, "Wilderness Medical Associates has become the de facto
standard in wilderness medical training."
INCLUDES: text & course materials; certification fees; 72 hours instruction;
American Heart Assn. BLS CPR, 3 year national certification
GRADES: Grades are based on attendance (100% required) and performance on both
written and practical exams. Letter graded for 3 credit hours. The course is
passed after proof of certification is provided.
