139.07 INTRODUCTION TO BACKCOUNTRY FIRST AID
DESCRIPTION: Wilderness medicine differs significantly from standard first aid
courses (i.e. Red Cross) that are oriented toward urban environments. In this
course you will be introduced to skills needed for medical emergencies when help
is hours or days away and calling 911 is not an option. This course will help
provide basic introductory knowledge to help you prepare for emergency
situations that involve prolonged patient care and transport, severe
environments, and improvised gear.
CONTENT: Topics include patient assessment, body systems, equipment
improvisation, trauma, environmental medicine, toxins, backcountry medicine, and
wilderness rescue.
CLASS FORMAT: Classes are fast-paced with an emphasis on practical skills. Part
of all class room time is spent working on practical hands-on simulations.
Simulations are video-taped and debriefed for enhanced learning.
GRADES: Grades are based on attendance (100% required) and performance on both
written and practical exams.
*** All class sessions are mandatory. Any student not attending the first class
session of a course will be dropped from the class and replaced by others that
are on the waiting list and in attendance of the class. Each student is
responsible for adding or dropping any classes with their college.
*** All classes require an additional trip / activity fee. All trip / activity
fees must be paid in full by the second class session or a $10
late fee will be charged.
*** There will be no refund of any trip or activity fees at anytime.
*** Pre-registration with the instructor is required. You cannot register
through BRUTUS.
*** You will be required to pay a $10.00 non-refundable (Cash Only! - No
Checks!) deposit of the trip fee to register.
*** Class room session times, locations, dates, trip dates, and fees are subject
to change. There will be no refund of deposit or trip fee if this is required. A
current OSU e-mail address will be used to contact all students enrolled in a
class for notification of any changes.
