Program Purpose, Goals, and Objectives
Sport Leadership and Sport Humanities (SLSH) prepares students for supervisory, leadership, and administrative positions in the sport and leisure industry and /or graduate programs in sport humanities, sport management and sport law.
SLSH combines social science and humanities disciplines to provide students with the theory and practice needed for entrance into the sport and leisure industry. SLSH informs students of the constantly changing multiple themes, issues, and practices that the industry confronts. Students comprehend the social, economic, political and legal issues that contour and shape the development of the industry and the various different meanings people (individually and collectively), bring and explore from their engagement in sport and leisure.
Careers in the public sector include leadership, supervisory, and administrative positions in public and commercial recreation agencies. Careers in the private sector include management positions at companies that provide goods and services such as equipment, facilities, consultation, instruction, and information in the sport and recreation sector.
At The Ohio State University, Sport Management is only offered as a graduate degree. This is true for many of the top, world-class Sport Management programs across the country. Therefore, the newly designed Sport Leadership & Sport Humanities track was designed to give students excellent preparation for a career in the sports industry and to prepare them for success in graduate programs such as Sport & Exercise Management, Sport & Exercise Humanities, and Law. The critical thinking and writing skills that will be developed in this track of the major make our students very marketable for such programs.
