Honors Program for Graduation with Honors

Honors Program for Graduation with Honors

Membership in the College of Education and Human Ecology Honors Program signifies rigor and high achievement in a program of study and incurs certain obligations and privileges. Honors students may be enrolled in any of the six undergraduate programs offered through the College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE). These programs include Exercise Science Education, Special Education, Sport and Leisure Studies, Technical Education and Training, Technology Education, and Pre-Education Early and Middle Childhood (offered on the regional campuses only). Requirements for these majors vary by program, but requirements for honors status within the EHE are the same regardless of major. This document describes the benefits of membership in the EHE Honors program, the process for achieving and maintaining honors status, and requirements for graduation with distinction.

Benefits of Honors Status

  • Priority scheduling of classes
  • Eligibility to enroll in honors courses in disciplines across campus
  • Opportunities to participate in research projects
  • Eligibility to live in an Honors residence hall
  • Special academic advising and information about scholarship opportunities
  • Invitation to special campus cultural and academic events

Students who maintain their honors status will graduate with honors in Education. They may also graduate with distinction in their area of study if they successfully complete a senior honors thesis.

Application to the College of Education and Human Ecology Honors Program

A requirement for membership and continuation in good standing is a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) average of 3.4. Students with a CGPA of 3.4 or higher who wish to become members of the EHE Honors Program should complete a College of Education and Human Ecology Honors Application Form and the Honors Contract.

The Honors Contract is the program of study that the potential EHE honors student should complete in consultation with the academic advisor in his or her School. The program should include challenging curricular work and should fulfill the academic conditions for maintaining honors status in the EHE.

The completed application form and the Honors Contract should be returned to the Student Services Office of the student’s program. The EHE Honors Director will review application materials and will send the student and the Student Services Advisor letters indicating the status of the application. Once the honors contract is approved, it becomes the student’s curricular requirements for graduation with honors in Education.

Students enrolled in one of the EHE programs may apply to the EHE Honors Program if they meet the requirement for membership, which is a CGPA average of 3.4. Potential EHE Honors members can also be students who have had Honors designations when they applied to one of the EHE undergraduate programs (i.e., students who entered the University with the Honors designation, or students in the Honors Program of another enrollment unit). When these students enter into one of the EHE undergraduate programs, they will automatically maintain honors status for a one-quarter grace period before they must apply and be accepted into the EHE Honors Program to retain their honors status.

Maintaining Honors Status in the College of Education and Human Ecology

Specific criteria must be met to maintain honors status:

  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.4
  • Complete honors course(s)
    1.  Complete one honors course across disciplines after admission to the College per academic year (beginning the Autumn Quarter after admission to the Honors Program) OR
    2.  Complete 5 credit hours of EDU H599 Honors Course during one quarter within three quarters of being accepted into the Honors Program and complete a written research report that is approved by the student’s faculty advisor.
  • Adhere to the Honors Contract
    1.  A student may change his or her Honors Contract by submitting the official Honors Contract Change Form, which requires approval of the faculty advisor and the Honors Director.
    2.  Changes that do not alter the strength or focus of the program of study will receive routine approval, but those that weaken or alter the program in significant ways will go to the EHE Honors Committee for consideration.

All students who have earned the honors designation in the EHE will receive a letter from the Honors Director each quarter informing them of their status.

A student may be removed from the list of honors designees if any of the following situations occur:

  • Changed Colleges
  • Graduated
  • Did not meet conditions for maintaining honors status

If the student’s CGPA falls below a 3.4, he or she will receive a warning letter from the Honors Director. The student will have one grace quarter to bring the CGPA back up.

Any student who did not meet the conditions for maintaining honors status may be reinstated by documenting that the deficiencies have been resolved. An honors reinstatement application must be completed and submitted to the Student Services Office of the School along with supporting materials.
