Transfer Students

Critical Information

Each quarter, the School of PAES welcomes transfer students from colleges and universities across Ohio, the United States, and the world. Our programs attract talented students who want to make a difference in fields of study such as:

  • Physical Education
  • Sport Leadership and Humanities
  • Business Education Teacher Education
  • Corporate Training and Development
  • Special Education
  • Exercise Science Education
  • Health Promotion

Success in these fields is dependent upon students graduating with a carefully selected curriculum and internship experience; something considered part of the foundation of the School of PAES.

While it is easy to show a first-time college student in our programs an example of a four-year curriculum, a program of study for students transferring in can be more complicated.

New first quarter freshmen and transfer students admitted to The Ohio State University have the option of direct enrollment into the School of Physical Activity & Educational Services (PAES). For direct enrollment, The School of PAES requires that incoming freshmen have a composite ACT score of 22 or higher (SAT score of 1020 or higher) or a high school class rank in the top 35% of their graduating class. Transfer students who meet OSU admission requirements can be directly enrolled into the School of PAES.

All undergraduate students directly enrolled in PAES (transfer or first-time) are considered "pre-majors" and must follow the application procedure for admission to the desired major. This procedure includes completion of prerequisite courses, achievement of minimum required grade point average, and any other requirement stipulated for the major. Because some of the PAES programs have competitive enrollment, official admission to each major may require a secondary application. The PAES Office of Student & Alumni Services (located in A100 PAES Building) has applications for each major available to students. Other admission criteria vary depending on the major. Some majors may have admission criteria that include a statement of intent, resume, letters of reference, and official transcripts of all college and university work (an OSU advising report is acceptable for coursework completed at OSU). Others require only a specific minimum OSU GPA and 12 quarter hours taken at Ohio State. See the table for admissions criteria for each program.

Course offerings or curriculum in some of our programs are "lock-step," meaning that many important courses need to be taken in sequential order and often those courses are only available once per year. This means that careful planning with an academic advisor is critical. Even so, there is always the chance that the completion of the program can be longer than anticipated.

To determine the likelihood of completing one of our selective and/or structured programs in a timely manner, please refer to our Quarter by Quarter sample curriculum sheets (See last column in the above chart):

Please note that current students enrolled in our majors will have scheduling priority and consequently not all courses noted on the Quarter by Quarter plans will be available at the time of transfer.

Many transfer students find it helpful to make an initial appointment with an academic advisor in the School of PAES even before deciding to transfer to Ohio State. Doing so can help inform students about which courses may or may not transfer into OSU and/or into a PAES program, specifically.

To make an appointment with an academic advisor, call (614) 292-6787. Our office is located in A100 PAES Building, 305 W. 17th Ave. Schedule an appointment well in advance to the transfer orientation, as advisors' calendars fill up quickly.
