Once you have finished your FCS ED program and earned your Two-Year Provisional license from The Ohio State University, you will continue to be professionally involved to become the BEST FCS teacher and prepare for your next career.

1. As an FCS teacher, you will annually develop Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) approved by the Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC) in your school. This plan is required by the Ohio Department of Education and intended to guide you to improve your teaching skill by setting goals, establishing a plan, implementing the plan and reporting in a self-reflective manner the outcome.

2. You may choose to extend your expertise by becoming CFCS (Certified in Family and Consumer Sciences) certified by American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. CFCS is a professional credential that you earn through an examination and maintain through documenting your continued professional development.

3. You will pass the PRAXIS III Performance Exam the first year of teaching which is guided by a first year Pathwise Mentor in order to earn the Five-Year Professional License, renewable every five years.

5. You are required to maintain your Ohio FCS teacher licensure so that you can continue to teach. Here are the next steps after leaving Ohio State with an Initial Career and Technical (66), Family and Consumer Sciences Education (#090120) teaching license.

  • Professional License (5-year):
    • Hiring School First Year Mentoring Pathwise (ETS)
    • PRAXIS III Performance Exam (ETS)
  • Professional License (5-year First renewal)
    • 6 Semester Hours, 9 quarter hours or 18 CEU's or equivalent approved LPDc
  • Professional License (5-year Second Renewal)
    • Master's degree

6. After teaching for three years you are eligible to earn the NBPTS (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards), a voluntary national licensing board for licensing teachers. This is another way to push you to become the best teacher you can be and be recognized for it too. The application is extensive and you'll want to plan ahead to complete it.

7. To establish your professional status please start or maintain professional association memberships, participation and leadership. Here are associations with which you are likely to become affiliated.

8. The Ohio State University has several opportunities to continue your education through endorsements (additions to your initial license) and Master's degrees. Planning these next steps carefully may lead to a doctoral degree too.
