Welcome! The NEW Ohio FCS standards are combined to create new courses. This web site presents three new Transitions and Careers courses. These courses are designed to help students successfully transition from middle to high school and from high school to postsecondary education. The teaching method used to design this course is inquiry units (pdf). The goal in using the inquiry method is to help students become more self-regulated, motivated, life-long learners with high levels of achievement preparing them for post-secondary education and their future in families and the workplace. The projects are designed to be of interest and engage students in authentic, "real world" project. This is a method advocated by the Ohio Resource Center, and supported by Ohio Department of Education, Division of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, the sponsors of this curriculum project. The project was directed by Ruth E. Dohner, The Ohio State University. Family and Consumer Science teachers participated in constructing the organization and inquiry units. Transitions and Careers courses are designed for three levels: introductory (middle school), intermediate (ninth grade), and advanced (junior or senior). By combining three NEW FCS standards: Build Relationships, Manage Personal Transitions, and Design a Career Blueprint, the courses will meet the needs of students at different stages of growth and development. Helping students successfully transition at important life stages is the intent of these inquiry units. Three standards will be met as students participate in the project-based inquiry units. Here are the units at each of the three levels.
