Entry Event

You have just been hired by your local news station, Channel 2, to be part of the newly developed teen segment. Channel 2 wants to increase the teenage viewing audience and believes it can do so if it dedicates a portion of its evening broadcast to issues directly affecting teens.

Your first assignment is to write and produce a six-minute segment called "Is Anyone Paying Attention?" For this piece, you are given a historical event or workplace concern to investigate. You are then to report how this event or concern has affected the current labor market. For the conclusion of your piece, you are required to make predictions on how current labor market trends will affect the labor market and the family of the future. As a new employee, you will be allowed to work with another individual, but you must have the segment written and on-video for the director to review. Do not forget to cite your sources of information as responsible newscasters are required to do.

Example of concerns or events:

  • End of WWII/Baby Boom
  • Outsourcing
  • Civil Rights Act in relation to multi-cultural expectations and understandings
  • Technological Revolution
  • Ethical workplace standards: (sexual harassment, theft, technology abuse, personal and professional conduct)
  • Minimum wage
  • 11/9/89 Collapse of the Berlin Wall
  • Health care and special leave benefits
  • Work-at-home trends
