Resources

Resources and topics are going to vary from year to year due to the labor market trends and emerging factors. With the flattening of the world (see Friedman, above), the careers within career fields are changing swiftly. Helping students understand the changes and stay on top of this is the challenge of this unit. The students and their teacher may decide together what topics will be addressed within the parameters of the FCS Standards and current issues and concerns related to the workplace. You are encouraged to place the topics in a drawing so that each set of partners will randomly draw a different topic.

Try to connect with a local news center that is producing newscasts for TV or the Internet. Newscasters may preview news scripts, consult, and/or evaluate the videos for the students.

After students have written their news segment, limit the time allotted for video production. Do not let students push you over the time limit. The unit is designed for six days.

For assistance in managing inquiries in the classroom, read "Managing Project Based Learning: Principles from the Field" by Mergendoller and Thomas (2002); http://www.novelapproachpbl.com/PBLResearch.htm.
