Aliens and Assets - Introductory Career Inquiry Unit
Unit Description
In this unit, students will identify interests, talents, and abilities that guide their school and career lives. Students will relate their personal assets to the 16 Ohio career fields. By the end of the unit, students will have created a beginning-level career portfolio that contains their personal profile as it relates to the Ohio career fields and goals for future success. Within the unit’s imaginary setting … because of the students’ success in presenting themselves, they get to stay on earth -- they will not be zapped; the aliens will not take them away.
Essential Questions:
- What assets (talents, skills, and fascinations) do people have that make them alike and different from other people of the same age? How are assets improved? How do assets impact academic success and career choice?
Critical/Driving Questions:
- What assets do I have to offer?
- Why can’t I just be a kid and have fun?
- Why do I need to think about a career now?
- What does self-efficacy have to do with careers and achievement?
- What goals do I have for myself?
- How can teenagers participate in schools and community in meaningful ways?
- How is academic achievement measured in middle schools, high school, and postsecondary education?
- What skills do I need to achieve academically?
- How does knowing multiple intelligences help academic achievement?
- Who are examples of those who have overcome difficult life circumstances?
- What does it take to overcome difficult circumstances?
- What does it take to pursue career success? Personally? Academically?
- What assets are valuable in school? Within relationships? The community? The workplace? How do adults contribute to your asset development? How can you nurture your relationships with your family and other adults?
- How do assets such as gifts/talents, fascinations/interests, and personal traits contribute to personal and career planning?
- What does it mean to maximize personal internal and external assets?
- What tools help discover one’s talents, interests, and traits?
- How are career goals related to personal assets?
