Zapped, but Not Trapped

America has been invaded by aliens! Everyone under the age of 16 has been abducted and taken aboard space ships. The aliens believe that those under 16 are just taking up space, and are useless to Earth’s environment. Citizens 16 years and older were not abducted because the aliens believe that they may have talents or skills that will be useful to society on earth. Those on the spaceship will be taken to planet Zar, where they will be digging trenches for the remainder of their lives. The only way you will be allowed to stay on earth is if you prove that you are an asset to the planet.

Goal: Your task is to show evidence that you are a valuable asset.

Role: You are an individual under the age of 16 who has been abducted by aliens.

Audience: You need to convince your abductors that you have talents and skills, and know how to make use of them for the benefit of society.

Situation: The challenge involves showing a relationship between your personal attributes and your future career intentions.

Product: You will present a portfolio that details and highlights all of your assets. You must also fully detail how you can maximize these assets and how they will benefit society in the future.

Standards and Criteria for Success: A successful portfolio will:

  1. Have an introduction page that contains a photo or visual representation of you.
  2. Include a written description of your talents, skills, gifts, fascinations, learning style(s), and developmental assets. Be sure to include examples to support your claims. Descriptions must be at least 1-2 pages typed, and should be written in essay form.
  3. Include a page of colorful, creative, pictures or photos illustrating your personal assets.
  4. Write a letter from the perspective of a friend or family member stating why you would be a valuable asset to society.
  5. Include a resume to promote what you already know and have done, including volunteer work.
  6. Using Excel to create a chart, show how your assets match at least two of the career fields.
  7. Using Excel, create a timeline of the steps you will take to accomplish academic goals over the next 2 years that will launch you into a successful future to show you are an asset on earth.
