Teacher Tips

Conduct activities in which students will get to know one another, and you will learn about them and their strengths. Include a short writing sample in the early stages of the class and an opportunity for each student to share something orally with the class. Use the oral and written sample to assign student partners for this assignment so that there is diversity in skills and, together, they have the strength in the partner relationship to perform this assignment.

There are two quality checks in this assignment that should increase the students' work quality. Student partners will have a high-school-student mentor, consultant, and reviewer of their work. They will watch and redo the video to get the quality they want and that also meets criteria. When students watch themselves on video, they are often good judges and wish to improve their work -- especially when they know someone outside the classroom will review it. Using digital video will make it possible to transport (e.g., Internet, CD, podcast) the infomercials to the high-school students assigned to review them.

Peers are asked to review and score the infomercial using the attached rubric. Peers can be too harsh or too easy as they score the work of their peers. It is suggested that students get points for accurate assessment of their own and peer work. If the assessment scoring is off-target, they have not earned the assessment points.

In order to personalize their goals for success, have students complete the Practical Problem-Solving REASON sheet, establishing goals and a plan to be successful.
