About the WDE Graduate Core Courses

The WDE MA core courses seek to give the student understanding about the workforce development system and its role in our changing economy and workplaces. They also provide students in the foundations of the focus areas of WDE, human resource development and adult learning. The courses provide students with the foundational skills to work in a wide variety of roles, helping individuals, communities, and organizations meet their training and education needs.

The PhD core courses provide students integrated theoretical and scholarly perspectives in workforce development and education. They also explore in depth knowledge generation, adult learning theories and organizational policy issues. The core courses provide the advanced knowledge and understanding necessary for individuals to serve as scholars, researchers, senior administrators, and leaders in a wide range of institutional and organizational settings related to workforce development and education.

The Master's of Arts core courses

  • EDU PAES 624: Foundations of Workforce Development and Education (UG 4 hours) (Au) Study of an integrated approach to workforce development and education programs and issues.
  • EDU PAES 672: Adult Learning in Society (UG 3) (Wi) Nature, extent, and significance of adult learning in society. History, forms, methodologies, theoretical issues, and philosophies.
  • EDU PAES 757: Aspects of Human Resource Development in Workforce Development and Education (G 3 hours) (Au) Frameworks and practices related to human resource development in workforce education.

The Doctor of Philosophy core courses

  • EDU PAES 911: Theoretical Perspectives on Workforce Development and Education (G 3 hours) (Au) A study of the theories and perspectives that support workforce development and education.
  • EDU PAES 912: Scholarly Perspectives of Workforce Development and Education (G 3 hours) (Wi) Introduces doctoral students to the scholarly process and helps them develop their own area of scholarly focus in workforce development and education.
  • EDU PAES 913: Knowledge Generation in Workforce Development and Education (G 3 hours) (Sp) Explores knowledge generation and dissemination within the field of Workforce Development and Education.
  • EDU PAES 932: Adult Learning Theory (G 3 hours) (Au) Examination of significant learning theories and their applicability to adult learning experiences.
  • EDU PAES 961: Policy Issues in Workforce Development and Education (G 3 hours) (Wi) Salient trends and issues in workforce education and lifelong learning are analyzed. Alternative viewpoints are critiqued. Recommendations are made for scholarship and practice.

Students admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy degree will be expected to complete the M.A. core courses, or show that they have completed similar courses elsewhere.
