School Nurse

Licensure program designed with a health education focus

The School Nurse Licensure Program is a postgraduate academic experience designed for baccalaureate level registered nurses. Through a combination of academic classroom study and a field placement, registered nurses will demonstrate the practices and principles of school nursing in a health education context.

The program, co-directed by The Ohio State University, College of Education and Human Ecology, School of Physical Activity and Educational Services, and the College of Nursing, prepares nurses to provide school health education and clinical resources for the children, parents and staff within a school-community setting. The program's goal is to prepare school nurses who provide quality comprehensive school health services.

Curriculum

The curriculum's conceptual framework is derived from Scope and Standards of Practice developed by the National Association for School Nurses, the learned society for this field. The School Nurse Program is accredited by the Ohio Department of Education. The curriculum has a health education emphasis focusing on teaching, counseling, and community health advocacy. Through a variety of academic and field experiences, learners will be prepared to serve as clinical and health education resource for students and families in a school setting.

Course Requirements

Nine courses plus a field based practicum comprise the program. Some course requirements may have been satisfied through prior academic coursework. Students can register for courses either as graduate non-degree or as a continuing education undergraduate learner.

Based on an applicant's degree, pediatric nursing background, and his/her previous health education courses, an individual learning plan will be established by the program coordinator.
