EHE Office of Research Funding Opportunities

Dissertation Fellowships

The College of Education and Human Ecology Office of Research, in partnership with the College Graduate Study Committee, awards graduate dissertation fellowships to three EHE departments (Consumer Sciences, Human Development and Family Science, and Human Nutrition) every academic year, based on availability of funds.

Faculty International Travel Grant

The Faculty International Travel Grant Program exists to strengthen EHE's tenured and tenure-track faculty members' professional development by presenting the results of their research and scholarship at international meetings and conferences. Regular tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply for up to $500. Faculty are eligible to receive a grant only once in a two year period. The Office of Research holds two competitions annually: spring (application deadline May 15 for travel between July and December) and autumn (application deadline November 15 for travel between January and June).

Graduate Student Travel Grant

The EHE Office of Research provides travel support on a matching basis to EHE graduate students who present research from their dissertation and thesis projects at national and international professional meetings. The amount of support is up to $250 for one trip per graduate student per year for a maximum of three years. Graduate students applying for the award are required to obtain approval and matching support from their Department/School (D/S), as well as a letter from Advisor/Mentor indicating commitment of support for expenses beyond those supported by D/S and College. A copy of the abstract of the planned presentation and the registration form must accompany the application. The cycle for this award program occurs three times throughout the year (March 1 for travel during April, May, June, July, August; August 1 for travel during September, October, November; November 1 for travel during December, January, February, March).

Honorarium for External Expert Review of Grant Proposals

The EHE Office of Research has initiated a program to provide an honorarium for external expert review of grant proposals that have received high scores without funding from federal funding agencies (e.g., NIH R01, NSF, IES/DOE, USDA) or an invitation to submit proposals after initial review of the letter of intent from prestigious foundations (e.g., Spencer, WT Grant, Kellogg, Gates, and possibly others that are considered as premiere/prestigious for purpose of national rankings). First submissions on NIH R01 renewal applications are also eligible for consideration.

Faculty will submit a copy of the review received from federal panel or the letter of invitation from the foundation to OR. Once approved for financial support by external reviewer, PIs will contact recognized experts of their choice who have served on review committees of organizations funding such grants (the expert cannot be a current member of the panel that will review the revised proposal) requesting evaluation of responses by PI to panel comments and the revised proposal. The reviewer will have two weeks to return a critical evaluation and recommendations for enhancing competitiveness of the re-submitted proposal.

External reviewers will receive an honorarium from EHE OR for the service. One obvious question concerns the definition of "high score". Rather than give an absolute number, assume that funding in the round in which proposal was reviewed was in 10th percentile. We would look favorably at requests for external review for proposals that received scores ranked in the 11th-20th percentile.

Interdisciplinary Seed Grant

The College of Education and Human Ecology is sponsoring a College-wide competitive interdisciplinary seed grants program. The objective of this program is to encourage innovative and synergistic scholarship among junior-level tenure-track/tenured EHE faculty that cuts across disciplines within the College. The 2010 program will provide up to three "seed" awards to interdisciplinary teams to collect preliminary data and prepare a competitive research proposal for submission to a federal agency or major foundation to secure funds for continuation of the research addressing problems best addressed by inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches. It is also expected that the program will encourage the development of new scholarly teams among faculty from diverse disciplines. Such outcomes of the investment are aligned with the EHE Strategic Plan to promote original research and build better scholarly-based community within the College.

Other Internal Funding Opportunities

In support of the research mission, the University provides numerous internal grant competitions that are available on an annual basis and typically provide investigators enough resources to initiate a line of research. OSP maintains a current list of these internal funding opportunities available to EHE faculty and staff:.

Outlined below is a list and brief description of key EHE-relevant internal competitions:

Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs (BETHA)

BETHA places a strong emphasis on educational and public service programs rather than research. In general, pure research programs are not funded by Battelle Endowment. Similarly, proposals that seek only to acquire technology (e.g., to purchase computers or other equipment) are not generally competitive for Battelle Endowment funding. Proposals that merely seek to use technology, rather than explore its consequences, will not be competitive. Interdisciplinary collaborations within the University and finite-term collaborations with other institutions are especially encouraged.

Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEE)

IEE Grant Enhancement Program provides competitively-awarded resources on a regular basis to strengthen Ohio State's educational, outreach, and research programs related to energy and the environment.

Mershon Center for International Security Studies

Each year, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies holds a competition for Ohio State University faculty and students to apply for grant funds to support research in international security. Applications from both faculty and students must be for projects that relate to one or more of the Mershon Center's three areas of focus: the use of force and diplomacy; the ideas, identities and decisional processes that affect security; and the institutions that manage violent conflict.

Outreach & Engagement

The Office of University Outreach & Engagement's grant program supports innovative and creative outreach and engagement initiatives that connect academic excellence with societal needs; it enhances and/or creates partnerships between members of the university community and community partners; and enhances development of a unit's outreach and engagement mission.

SEEDS: OARDC Research Enhancement Competitive Grants Program

SEEDS grants are intended to accomplish the following objectives: (a) address problems of importance to agriculture, the food industry and the environment aspects of these problems; (b) stimulate new collaborations among scientists from different disciplines and between OARDC and private-sector partners; enhance and encourage creative and innovative research; and (c) employ SEEDS funds to leverage external resources.

Summer Research Scholarships

Know a student involved in undergraduate research? Interested in working with an undergraduate researcher over the summer quarter? Let undergraduate students know that information and applications for Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarships for the URO Summer Research Fellowships, University Honors & Scholars Summer Research Scholarships, and Mayers Summer Research Scholarships in the Biological Sciences are available now.

Technology Enhanced Learning and Research (TELR)

Professional Development Grants support the professional development of faculty to incorporate educational technology into their teaching or research and of instructional and information technology staff beyond customary job training.
