Endorsements

The Department of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University offers five endorsement programs for teachers who hold a standard Ohio teaching certificate or license. Certified or licensed teachers seeking an endorsement will complete the required courses and the appropriate assessments in order to be recommended for licensure in one of the following areas.

If you would like to pursue an endorsement through the Department of Teaching and Learning, please review our Step-by-Step Guide and the Program Sheet for the endorsement you would like to complete. It is strongly recommended that you schedule an appointment with a T&L Academic Advisor prior to taking any courses towards an Endorsement. To do this, please call the Office of Graduate Student Services at (614) 292-2332.

Intent to Enroll in T&L Endorsement

To notify the T&L Office of Graduate Student Services (GSS) that you would like to pursue one of the following endorsements, please complete and submit the appropriate online form in Step 1 of the Step-by-Step Guide. Please note that this application does not admit or enroll you in Ohio State.

Early Childhood Generalist

The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement will allow teachers holding a standard Ohio license in PK-3 to add 4th and 5th grade in all subject areas. The addition of the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement to an Early Childhood license provides teachers with additional teaching options, and facilitates the mobility of teachers into Ohio from other states. This endorsement cannot be added to any other teaching license.

Middle Childhood Generalist

The Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement allows candidates who are licensed to teach two subject areas in grades 4-9 to add a licensure to teach all subject areas in grades 4-6 only. The addition of the Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement to a Middle Childhood license provides teachers with additional teaching options, and facilitates the mobility of teachers into Ohio from other states. This endorsement cannot be added to any other teaching license.

P-6 Mathematics Specialist Endorsement

The P-6 Mathematics Endorsement is a graduate-level program for teachers wanting to specialize in math instruction. Mathematics specialist (limited to a kindergarten-primary, elementary, or early childhood license, or middle childhood, high school, or adolescence to young adult mathematics teaching license), valid for providing coaching and professional development in mathematics education for classroom teachers of mathematics in grades Pre-Kindergarten through six. Candidates must have at least three years of successful experience teaching mathematics under a standard teaching certificate or license. The P-6 Mathematics Endorsement is professional development program that Teachers may pursue to be considered "highly qualified" Teachers of math education for grades P-6. Students seeking the endorsement are required by state mandate to hold a standard Ohio teaching certificate or license. The addition of the P-6 Mathematics Endorsement to a standard Ohio teaching license or certificate provides teachers with additional teaching options, and facilitates the mobility of teachers into Ohio from other states.

Reading Endorsement

The Reading Endorsement is a graduate-level program for teachers wanting to specialize in reading instruction. The Reading Endorsement is professional development program that teachers may pursue to be considered "highly qualified" teachers of reading for grades K-12. Students seeking the endorsement are required by state mandate to hold a standard Ohio teaching certificate or license.

TESOL Endorsement

The Department of Teaching and Learning offers an endorsement program for TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) for teachers holding a standard Ohio certificate or license in another area. Certified or licensed teachers are eligible to complete this program. Anyone who holds a certificate or license can pursue the TESOL endorsement. The addition of the TESOL Endorsement to a standard Ohio teaching license or certificate provides teachers with additional teaching options, and facilitates the mobility of teachers into Ohio from other states.
