Universal Design House

Students in the service learning course conduct home assessments as part of their grade, and to teach them the aspects of the house that are looked at in a Universal Design home assessment. These assessments take about an hour. Students measure heights of light switches, counters, sinks, amount of floor space, types of hardware used in kitchens and baths, along with many other aspects. At the end of the house assessment student's type up a full house report on what aspects of the home could be changed to make it more accessible for everyone. Included in the assessment are example items that can be purchased at local hardware stores.
