Higher Education and Student Affairs

The Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) program at The Ohio State University is one of the nation’s preeminent educational programs. Our rich heritage of research and practice, fueled by our renowned faculty, benefit students in the classroom and beyond. In fact, HESA has graduated distinguished scholars, presidents, provosts, deans and other leaders in higher education, the government, non-profit organizations and even the private sector.

Our program has prepared leaders for higher education and student affairs for more than six decades. This tradition is reflected in our numerous alumni, many of whom are senior leaders in the field. Our students, too, are recognized for their involvement and leadership in and out of the classroom. Above all, our comprehensive curriculum emphasizes rigorous research and professional development creates wonderful opportunities for learning, collaboration and community-building.

The Student Personnel Assistantship Program (SPA) is a part of HESA. The SPA Program connects HESA students with assistantship opportunities across and even beyond Ohio State’s campus. Learn more about funding, interviews, and admissions processes.

Degree Programs

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Studies, HESA
Whether your career goals are to become a professor or administrator, the PhD in higher education and student affairs provides a wealth of experiences and how to think about educational problems in complex ways.

Doctor of Education (EdD) in Educational Studies, HESA
With a doctor of education degree from Ohio State you will be prepared to become a leader of higher education as well as a scholarly practitioner who understands the importance of equity and social justice.

Master of Arts in Educational Studies, HESA
A masters in higher education administration provides you the foundations of practice, research and theory. Coupled with the Student Personnel Assistantship, your training and education will drive your professional success.

Higher Education and Student Affairs Minor
This 12-credit hour minor is a great opportunity to make meaning of yourself, your experiences and your potential career choices as an undergraduate student at Ohio State.

Interdisciplinary Leadership Studies Minor, HESA Courses
Get prepared for future leadership and professional roles. The Higher Education and Student Affairs program offers several courses in the interdisciplinary leadership studies minor that teach you the principles, concepts and theories essential to your future professional aspirations.

Student Personnel Assistantship Program
The SPA program links PhD and master’s HESA students with funded assistantship opportunities at Ohio State and other institutions in central Ohio. Students hold assistantships in housing, admissions, academic affairs, student activities, multicultural programming, career counseling and more.
