Master of Science in Kinesiology, Sport Management

Sport management professionals from Ohio State possess the unique skills that keep sports and physical activities organizations successful. With a master's degree in sport management, you'll be prepared for careers that range from facilities managers and sports marketers to athletic directors and head coaches, in all areas of athletics.

Overview

The Sport Management program at Ohio State has prepared students for leadership roles in the sport industry for more than 40 years. This innovative and internationally ranked program will teach you the important elements of the profession such as:

  • advanced knowledge in sport management and leadership
  • planning and managing sporting events and facilities
  • sport marketing principles
  • legal issues in sport, with a focus on liability
  • theories and techniques of sport management

Your studies will focus on what you'll encounter in the real world and how you can apply what you learn in classroom into a career you'll love.

You also will complete an integrative, hands-on internship or produce an in-depth thesis project to expand your understanding and the study of sport management.

Whether your interests are in intercollegiate athletics, professional sports franchises or recreational sports, Columbus has many opportunities for educational and professional sports experiences.

You'll have direct access to Ohio State's athletic department as well as opportunities at six other universities in Central Ohio. And with nearly 20 professional sports organizations in Ohio - three are in Columbus and the others are within a short drive from the capital city - we'll help you find your best fit.

American interest in sport and physical activity produces a great need for professionally trained sport managers. Many graduates of The Ohio State University sport management program have prestigious positions throughout the industry - serving as athletic directors, head coaches, general managers and executive directors of sport, leisure and fitness organizations.

Program Requirements

Deadline to apply: December 1
Program start: Autumn semester
Prerequisites: Bachelor's degree, current GRE scores
Minimum semester hours to degree completion: 31
Coursework: Leadership in sport, sport marketing, managing sporting event and facilities, sport law
Degree requirements: 3 core courses (10 hours), 5 specialization courses (15 hours), thesis (6 hours)/internship (8 hours)
