Master of Education, Integrated Social Studies
The Master of Education in Integrated Social Studies leads to an initial teaching license in the state of Ohio to teach social studies in grades 7-12. Students in this program learn the latest theory and research in the field of teaching and learning, as well as methods related to social studies and global studies.
The Integrated Social Studies program is grounded in research and theory and will help you apply research and theoretical understandings to your teaching practice through supervised field experiences.
Our education framework serves as a guide for each program to assist preservice teachers develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to become effective teachers across content areas. You’ll be prepared to become a teacher leader who advocates for equity and justice in education.
Core courses relate to equity and diversity in education, methods of teaching and learning for Integrated Social Studies students, a focus on one-to-one technology, a master’s-level, inquiry-based project, and an edTPA project that demonstrates students’ readiness to be a licensed teacher. This program prepares you to become a leader in a school district, advocating for issues of social justice in the classroom. With two supervised student teaching experiences, our theory-to-practice approach to teacher education allows you to try out new skill-sets in a hands-on setting.
You also are supported by experienced faculty instructors and a faculty advisor, a program manager who coordinates their academic program and student teaching experiences, graduate associates as well as an advising staff who oversee progress through this intense program of study.
Combined with a dedication to equity, social justice and building engaged, democratic classrooms, the Integrated Social Studies MEd program is fully accredited and is consistently ranked among the top programs in the nation. It meets national and state curricular standards including the National Council for the Social Studies Teacher Preparation Standards.
Graduates of the MEd program earn their initial four-year Ohio teaching license while completing graduate studies. Graduates typically teach in a high-school in Ohio, but may also identify positions across the nation or abroad.
Some graduates go to work in legal offices in a variety of roles, the publishing field, or seek career opportunities in local libraries, as tutors or coaches, or in the field of writing.
Our graduates consistently accept a variety of position in the field and are sought after locally, as well as across the nation.
We partner with Career Services in the College of Education and Human Ecology to prepare students for their job search.
Prior to admission, applicants to the MEd program must complete prerequisites related to their intended licensure area. It is important to note that applicants may have prerequisites in progress during the Autumn semester in which they submit their application, but applicants must have all prerequisites completed by the end of the Spring semester before they intend to begin the MEd program.

The MEd in Integrated Language Arts Education is a competitive program. Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed by completion of the prerequisites. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA in their content prerequisites.
Admission Considerations: all applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree prior to the start of classes, minimum GPA of a 3.0, experience working with youth in various group settings
GRE: Applicants with an overall GPA between a 2.75-2.99 MUST take the General Test of Graduate Record Exam (GRE) to be eligible for admission to the MEd. Applicants with an overall GPA of 3.0 and above are not required to submit GRE Scores.
