Biography

Donna F. Berlin holds a BS in elementary education and psychology from Syracuse University, an MA in elementary education and guidance from New York University, and a PhD in early and middle childhood education with emphases in mathematics and research and statistics from The Ohio State University. She has taught at the elementary school level and has taught courses in mathematics and science education at both the Columbus and the Newark campuses at OSU. In addition, Dr. Berlin has been involved in many national and state level grants. She served as the Mathematics Education Associate for the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education and as a Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator for The National Center for Science Teaching and Learning, both funded by the U.S. Department of Education; and most recently, as a member of a STEM Conference National Steering Committee, funded by the National Science Foundation. Her research emphases include the integration of mathematics and science education, elementary and middle school mathematics education, action research, educational technology in mathematics and science, and learning processes and styles. Her numerous articles on these topics have appeared in journals such as the Arithmetic Teacher, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Journal of Science Education and Technology, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Phi Beta Delta International Review, School Science and Mathematics, and Science Educator. Her work has appeared in two books published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (1995, 2003) and in the International Handbook of Science Education (1998). Dr. Berlin has presented papers and conducted seminars and workshops at numerous national mathematics and science education conferences as well as been invited to lecture at universities and conferences in 20 countries. In addition, Dr. Berlin has served as the editor of many conference proceedings at the national and international levels, and edited School Science and Mathematics Integrated lessons in the School Science and Mathematics journal for several years. She received the School Science and Mathematics Association Award for Excellence in Integrating Science and Mathematics for her pioneering model development and research related to the integration of science and mathematics education. Dr. Berlin is a Past President of the School Science and Mathematics Association; a member of the Advisory Board for the Whitaker Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education at the Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Meyers, Florida; and serves as the Mathematics Content Expert for the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC).
