Darcy Haag Granello

Darcy Haag Granello, Ph.D., is a Professor of Counselor Education, an Ohio Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with a supervising credential, and a 2018 Fellow of the American Counseling Association. She is Founding Director of The Ohio State University Suicide Prevention Program, the largest comprehensive campus suicide prevention program in the United States. She is the creator of REACH, a suicide prevention gatekeeper training program that has been offered to more than 38,000 people. In 2026, REACH was recognized by the federal government as an Evidence-Based Best Practice and is in the Suicide Prevention Resource Center Best Practice Registry. Darcy has published over 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals, has made over 350 international, national, and state presentations and has secured over $6 million in funding for suicide prevention. She is co-author of six books, including three on suicide prevention and intervention. In 2011, she received the OSU Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the highest teaching honor given by the University.

My work centers on two major foci: suicide prevention and counselor preparation.

Suicide Prevention: I have been involved in suicide prevention since 2006, when I created the OSU Suicide Prevention Program. Since that time, I have presented and published extensively in suicide prevention and intervention and have become a nationally and internationally recognized scholar in this work. In 2026, the Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training Program that I created in 2011, called REACH, was recognized by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) as a National Best Practice, and is in the National Best Practice Registry (https://sprc.org). REACH has been delivered to more than 38,000 individuals, including university students, staff, and faculty as well medical workers in a large healthcare system (https://REACHSuicidePrevention.org). Two-year follow-up data indicate that after completing the 90-minute REACH training, more than 98% of participants remain confident, competent, and willing to intervene if they believe someone is suicidal. 

Counselor Preparation: I am a counselor by training and hold a counseling license. For more than two decades, I have been interested in strategies to enhance the cognitive complexity of counselors-in training (and practicing counselors), as well as ways that we can improve classroom climate and pedagogy. In 2021, I became an Inaugural Senior Fellow of the Drake Institute (the Teaching Institute at OSU), where I am co-founder and co-director of the University’s Compassionate Pedagogy Initiative.
