Dean Achterberg creates space to serve Buckeyes’ spiritual needs
The difference between fitting in on campus and feeling alienated can be as small as a cozy room. A private space to meditate, worship and reflect shows members of Ohio State’s community that they belong and are valued.
This month, the College of Education and Human Ecology created the Meditation and Reflection Room in 191 Arps Hall, 1945 N. High Street Columbus, OH 43210. The room will serve as a welcoming and supportive place for those needing a short interval of solitude.
Dean Cheryl Achterberg was inspired to create the space after she hosted roundtable discussions following the Nov. 28 tragedy on campus. During those discussions, Achterberg decided that EHE needed to do more for individuals of all faiths.
“A space like this was an unmet need,” Achterberg shared. “I realized that this is something that we could take the initiative on and make a difference.”
The unlocked room extends a circle of support to meet the spiritual needs of all EHE faculty, staff and students within a comfortable, welcoming environment.
