Refining HEROES: A Research Study
Free reading tutoring for 6- to 9-year-old students
Is your child between the ages of 6 and 9 and struggling with classroom reading?
Is your child reading at a beginning reading level?
HEROES is a literacy intervention for 6- to 9-year-olds having great difficulty with beginning reading. We are studying ways to improve the lesson design of the HEROES literacy intervention.
The study offers free, small-group tutoring for eligible students.
Eligible students:
- have or are at-risk of having reading disabilities
- are between the ages of 6 and 9 (inclusive)
- are working at a beginning reading stage (Kindergarten through second grade)
Tutoring lessons consist of small-group lessons (one to three children) with graduate students supervised by faculty. They include:
- high-quality, evidence-based reading instruction
- tailored to specific reading needs
Lesson duration:
- Is 3-4 days per week for approximately 30-40 minutes each for 12 weeks
- Follows the university’s set class dates for each summer, fall and spring semesters
- Summer semester: May – July
- Fall semester: August – December
- Spring semester: January – April
Tutoring participation will end when a student reaches a mid-second-grade reading level or, for younger students, when they are reading on grade level.
We are conveniently located on Ohio State’s Columbus campus in the Physical Activity and Educational Services (PAES) Building, 305 Annie and John Glenn Ave.
This research is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
