Tanner Professor Lecture: Leaving Your Rights at the Schoolhouse Gate? Free Expression and Teenagers in a School Environment
10-11:30 a.m.
Ohio Union, 1739 N High St.
Ohio Staters, Inc Traditions Room, 2nd Floor

In this presentation, Bryan Warnick, the newly appointed Daniel Tanner Foundation Endowed Professor, discusses student speech in school environments. Recently, the courts have given more and more discretion to school officials to limit speech in school environments. With constitutional protections receding, this makes the ethical judgement of school officials critical in educational spaces. Professor Warnick will discuss ways that schools are unique ethical environments for expression — making them both expansive and restrictive of speech. The lecture will explore how educators can interpret what freedoms of expression should look like in the unique educational space of schools.
