Our faculty and staff connect people, ideas and resources to put knowledge into practice and create meaningful impact in communities both near and far. They bring new discoveries to light regularly, which inspires innovation in living and learning.
Here are some of their our latest grants, honors and appointments to important roles by their professional associations.

Betz awarded Fulbright US Scholar Award to Norway
Michael Betz, associate professor of human development and family science, was awarded a 2023-2024 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for his study COVID-19’s Impact on Fertility in Norway and the United States. From August to December 2023, Betz will assess how COVID-19 impacted fertility decisions in Norway and the U.S. He will uncover the extent to which differences in pre-pandemic social welfare programs and pandemic policy responses influenced these outcomes.


Mayhew, Ilic each receive $1M in grants for cutting-edge research
Matthew Mayhew, the Flesher Endowed Professor of Higher Education Administration, received $1.2 million from the Templeton Religious Trust. He will conduct the National Study of Faculty Religious, Spiritual and Secular Affiliation and Practice. His purpose is to document how faculty’s spiritual beliefs interact with their roles as academics.
Sanja Ilic, associate professor of human nutrition and an Ohio State Extension food safety specialist, received just under $1 million from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, to establish Biological Approaches to Mitigate Biofilm-Associated Food Safety Risks in Indoor Leafy Greens Production.
She partners with local growers in this research as well as in another grant from the Ohio Department of Agriculture to focus on Establishing Science-based Strategies for Prevention and Mitigation of Human Pathogens in Hydroponic Specialty Crop Systems.

Abdi receives outstanding article award
Nimo Abdi, assistant professor of teaching and learning, received the William J. Davis Award for best article published in the journal Educational Administration Quarterly. The award was created in 1979 by the University Council for Educational Administration. The award committee selected Abdi’s article “Somali Immigrant Mothers’ Experiences of School Engagement: Implications for School Leaders.”

Blount receives AERA award
Jackie Blount, professor of history and philosophy of education, was honored at the April American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference with the 2023 Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in Education Research Award. She is known for her scholarship that has paved the way for many scholars and practitioners interested in how women navigate school leadership, gender and sexuality.

Ford sought for gifted, special education association leadership roles
Donna Y. Ford, distinguished professor of gifted and special education, undertook leadership roles on three association committees. They are:
- The Professional Development Committee of the The Council for Exceptional Children, The Association for the Gifted (CEC-TAG)
- The Council for Exceptional Children, The Association for the Gifted (CEC-TAG), Diversity Development Committee
- The American Educational Research Association, Research on Creative Gifted and Talented SIG, Executive Committee, (AERA RoCGT)

Gimbert honored for best education paper of the year
Belinda Gimbert, associate professor of educational administration, received the 2023 award for best paper published in 2022 from the National Education Finance Academy. Titled “Mid-Career Teacher Retention: Who Intends to Stay, Where, and Why?” the article appeared in the Journal of Education Human Resources. It was chosen for its exceptional scholarly quality from a pool of all manuscripts published in the previous year and volume.

Hanna article about household finances one of most downloaded
An article by Sherman Hanna, professor of consumer sciences, with alumni and a colleague titled “Husbands, Wives and Perception of Relative Knowledge about Household Finances,” was recognized as one of the most downloaded in the 12 months following publication in the journal Financial Planning Review.

Huang recognized with AERA SIG award
Becky Huang, professor of second language education, received the Mid-Career Award at the recent conference of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). The award was bestowed upon her by the Second Language Research Special Interest Group (SIG).

McNair delivers invited lecture on children’s literature
Jonda C. McNair, elementary and secondary teacher education and Charlotte S. Huck Endowed Professor of Children's Literature, presented the invited 2023 Barbara Elleman Research Library Lecture at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in April. The opportunity recognizes prominent children’s literature experts and authors.

James L. Moore III, counselor education and Distinguished Professor of Urban Education, received the 2023 S. Kent Butler Transformative Impact Award from the American Counseling Association. The award recognizes an association member who serves as a professional counselor and has worked tirelessly to promote equity, inclusion and access.
Moore currently is executive director of Ohio State’s Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male. He is also on leave from the college while he serves as head of the Directorate for Education and Human Resources of the National Science Foundation. The directorate supports research that enhances learning and teaching, as well as broad efforts to achieve excellence in STEM education at all levels and in all settings.
