Bachman dissertation recognized by AERA

Hadley Bachman, who recently completed a PhD in Educational Administration and currently works for the college’s Center on Education and Training for Employment (CETE), won this year's Outstanding Dissertation Honorable Mention for the Family, School, Community Partnerships Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association.

Bachman said that the field of family and community engagement was the impetus for her return to academia and the focus of her scholarship as a doctoral student and candidate. She was guided in her work as a graduate research associate under Principal Investigator Barbara Boone at the college’s Statewide Family Engagement Center, a federally funded research and technical assistance center located in CETE.

She said her work was strengthened by the mentorship and content expertise of her advisor, Professor Karen Stansberry Beard, and the rest of her committee. Her dissertation, “Family Engagement Efficacy Beliefs of Educators: Validating the Interpretation and Use of a New Measure,” contributes a much-needed research tool to the field of family engagement. It can be used to build new understandings of teachers’ mindsets when working with students’ families.
