Graduate – Application Checklist 

Department of Human Sciences

All programs require the following materials:

  • Online Application
    • Submit online application through the Graduate and Professional Admissions office: http://gpadmissions.osu.edu/
    • Most programs require selection of a specialization.
      • Consumer Sciences- Family Resource Management (FMR), Fashion and Retail Studies (FRS), or Hospitality Management (HMT)
      • Human Development and Family Science – MS requires selection of Couple and Family Therapy (CFT), PhD has the option to add CFT
      • Human Nutrition – Nutrition Research (NTS) or Professional Studies (NPS)
      • Kinesiology - Health and Exercise Science (HEN), Physical Education (PEN), or Sport Management (PSN)
  • Transcripts
    • Official transcripts generated by the registrar’s office at all previous institutions attended should be submitted. Student generated/unofficial transcripts are not accepted.
    • Students who have completed coursework at Ohio State should generate an advising report to include with application materials.
    • Applicants to the Human Nutrition master’s program are required to complete Biochemistry as a prerequisite. Competitive applicants have also completed Fundamentals of Nutrition, Organic Chemistry lecture, Organic Chemistry lab, Vertebrate Physiology, and Statistics.
  • Statement of Purpose
    • A brief autobiographical statement describing how this program aligns with your educational and professional experiences, goals, and objectives.
    • A personal statement may also include any educational, economic, and/or personal challenges, describing adversity faced and how the applicant persevered to overcome those challenges. 
    • Applicants to the Human Nutrition master’s program should indicate a potential faculty advisor of interest. See program website for faculty profiles.
  • CV/Resume
    • CV or resume of no more than two pages.
    • Applicants to the Sport Coaching master’s program should have at least 2 years of experience coaching children, youth, or adults.
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
    • Applicants provide contact information for three individuals who are acquainted with their academic program, scholastic ability, or professional performance. Upon submission of the application, a link is emailed to the recommenders to submit their letter.
    • Applicants to the Human Development and Family Science, Couple and Family Therapy specialization should provide references who are able to speak to the applicant’s potential to be a clinician.
  • Standardized Test Scores
    • International applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency. This can be done by reporting Test of English scores from TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo. This requirement can also be met by earning a degree from OSU’s list of Exempt Countries.
    • GRE requirements vary by program:
      • Consumer Sciences
      • CONSCI-MS FMR (Family Resource Management) GRE or GMAT required
      • CONSCI-MS FRS (Fashion and Retail Studies) No GRE
      • CONSCI-MS HMT (Hospitality Management) No GRE
      • CONSCI-PH FMR (Family Resource Management) GRE or GMAT required
      • CONSCI-PH HMT (Hospitality Management) GRE required
