50-Hour Field Experience Requirement
Per Ohio requirements, candidates who began their TESOL Endorsement program during or after Autumn 2017 must complete a total of 50 hours of fieldwork in order to earn their endorsement. This can be accomplished in one of two ways:
- Option 1: Document 50 field hours in self-coordinated teaching locations according to guidelines provided by the program, and obtain approval via a signed form from a direct supervisor.
- Option 2: Take TLTED 5189.66 to obtain 30 hours of field placement and complete the remaining 20 field hours in self-coordinated teaching locations according to guidelines provided by the program (with approval via a signed form from a direct supervisor). Since 30 hours are accrued during TLTED 5189.66, candidates can complete the remaining 20 hours throughout their time in the program by supervised instruction/support of English learners.
The final course—TLTED 5189.66 Advanced Field Experience in TESOL— involves extensive, 30 hours of observation and direct instruction to English learners in a K-12 school setting. Candidates are supervised by a licensed or endorsed TESOL educator but must receive prior approval from the district where the placement will occur before working with a TESOL supervisor. Candidates who are ready to complete this final course in Spring Semester should contact the Teaching, Learning, and Educational Studies Academic and Graduate Student Services office (TLES) during Autumn Semester (deadline is October 1) in order to complete the placement application in a timely manner (tles@osu.edu).
