A panel of national experts including Laura Justice, an EHE distinguished professor and executive director of the Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy, has developed evidence-based recommendations to improve the reading skills of young students.
The practice guide, Foundational Skills to Support Reading for Understanding in Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade, can be used in the classroom to improve teaching and learning around phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary and other academic language skills.
Geared towards teachers, administrators and educators who want to improve their students’ foundational reading skill the guide includes four recommendations:
- teach students academic language skills, including the use of inferential and narrative language, and vocabulary knowledge;
- develop awareness of the segments of sounds in speech and how they link to letters;
- teach students to decode words, analyze word parts, and write and recognize words;
- ensure that each student reads connected text every day to support reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension
The Institute of Education Sciences publishes practice guides in education to provide educators with the best available evidence and expertise on current challenges in education. The What Works Clearinghouse develops practice guides in conjunction with an expert panel, combining the panel’s expertise with the findings of existing rigorous research to produce specific recommendations for addressing these challenges.
